Becca took Nancy's hand as they sat on the sofa, looking at each other.

"Whether you believe it or not, you dont need my help where Nikki's concerned; you are a brilliant mom to her, she's the spitting image of you..."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah she is; you were the same at her age. Cheeky but adorable; cute but no trouble"

"I know; i look at her and i'm glad she's here but sometimes i get that little piece of me inside of guilt..."

"Guilt for what?"

"For keeping her and not knowing if i was gonna resent her because of what happened"

"You will never resent her, you couldnt; i thought excatly the same with you but you know i really resented and felt guilty about?"

"What?"

"That i wasnt strong enough to fight for you; but i knew it had to be better for mom to bring you up and me still see you everyday than not been able to see you at all"

"I guess; i cant believe she'll be starting school in September, it doesnt seem real enough"

"I know and for the first few days, you'll find it hard but if you are able to leave her when you're at lectures and whatever, you'll be fine; and if you cant get there, i'll pick her up"

"I've missed out on so much of her life already; when we walk into a room and you're there, she runs straight into your arms, she's never been like that with me or Jay..."

"That's because she's spent a lot of time with me and i spoil her rotten"

"But it makes me feel like she loves you more"

"She doesnt; everytime she's with me, all she talks about is you, asking when mommy's coming to pick her up"

"Really?"

"Yeah; there is no one she loves more than you, i promise"

"Thanks..."

"Mommy..." Nikki said as she came running into the room and onto her lap.

"Yes baby"

"Will you take me to see daddy?"

"Daddy's working"

"Please mommy"

"Okay; go and get your shoes and coat on"

"Thank you mommy"

Nikki hugged her before she climbed down and ran into the bedroom; Becca grabbed her bag adn handed Nancy some money.

"Get a milkshake on me..."

"You dont have to"

"I want to; go on, go and have some fun with your daughter"

"Thanks mom"

Nancy hugged her before grabbing her jacket, phone and keys as Nikki came running out with her shoes and coat on; she took her mom's hands before they left the flat. They entered Il Gnosh where Justin was just clearing a table; he put the stuff in the kitchen before coming back out as Nikki ran and jumped into his arms.

"Hiya beautiful; what are you doing here?"

"I wanted you daddy"

"Well i'm a little bit busy at the moment but as soon as i'm free, i'll come over, yeah?"

"Okay daddy"

As he put Nikki down and watched her run over a table to sit down, he turned to Nancy.

"Sorry, she really wanted to see you"

"It's fine; can i get you anything?"

"Just a milkshake for Nikki"

"Okay; i'll bring it over"

"Thanks"

He kissed her before he got back to work and Nancy joined Nikki at the table.

After a while, Nikki had finished her milkshake and wanted to go to sleep; Nancy held her in her arms as she carried her back to the flat. She gently laid her on the bed and took her shoes and coat off before pulling the duvet over her daughter; she sat next to her and watched her sleep before kissing her forehead and leaving the room. Becca handed her a drink as they sat upto the table where Nancy opened her books to start studying again.

"You okay Nance?"

"Fine, i'm just tired"

"Why dont you have a lie down?"

"No, besides i have to get some of this done; i'm behind again"

"There's no point in trying to study if you're tired Nance; you wont get anywhere"

"I know but i have to try...for Nikki's sake"

"Tell you what, just grab an hours sleep and i will take Nikki with Caitlin to meet Jake from work and we'll see his family or something"

"No, i wanna spend time with her"

"It'll be fine but you're gonna end up falling asleep on her"

"Mom, i'm fine; i just need to get some of this done and i'll be fine"

"You sure?"

"Yes; please, just trust me"

"Okay; i'll make a start on dinner"

"Thanks"

As Becca went into the kitchen, Nancy sighed and drank her drink as she slowly started to complete her work.

The months went by and Nancy had finally completed her course and was confident she would gain her qualifications; the holidays was now here and all of Nikki's uniform was ready for September. While Justin was working yet again, Nancy was looking after Nikki; after giving her a bath and getting her dressed, Nancy got her daughter ready before putting her coat and shoes on and leaving the flat.

"Where we going mommy?" she asked as she held Nancy's hand.

"To see Auntie Sarah and Uncle John Paul"

"Yay"

"Come on"

As they headed over to Washed Up, Nikki's face lit up as she saw Sarah and ran over into her arms.

"Hey cheeky" Sarah said as she spun Nikki around as Nancy walked through the door.

"Auntie Sarah"

"Hey Nance" Sarah said as she looked up at her.

"Hi Sarah; looks like Nikki's happy to see you"

"How are you?"

"Completely shattered but i'm glad the course is over now; i get to spend some time with Nikki and hang out with you and John Paul"

"Yeah; actually we're going The Loft tonight if you wanna join us?"

"Yeah?"

"Yeah, we'd love it if you did"

"Okay, but only if i can get a babysitter for Nikki"

"Okay; i should get back to work, what you got planned for today?"

"We're seeing Uncle John Paul" Nikki answered before Nancy adn Sarah laughed.

A while later, they were at John Paul's where Nancy sat on the sofa with him while Nikki sat playing in front of them.

"How's it going Nance?"

"Okay"

"Just okay?"

"Yeah"

"What's up?"

"Nothing; how are things with you?"

"Great but we're not talking about me are we?"

"I dont wanna talk about it"

"Nance..."

"Please John Paul"

"Okay; are you coming out with us tonight?"

"Maybe"

"I'd like it if you did; it's been ages since we've been out"

"I know but it's kinda hard with Nikki" she snapped.

"Sorry; i didnt mean to upset you"

"You didnt, i'm sorry"

"What is it?"

"It's nothing, honestly"

"Okay..."

"I'd better get back; i've got a couple of things to do and i need to find someone to look after Nikki if i'm coming out tonight"

"Okay..."

"Nikki, get you coat on" Nancy said.

As they head for the door, Nikki holding Nancy's hand, Nancy turned round and looked at John Paul in front of her.

"I'll call you later"

"Okay"

"Bye Uncle John Paul" Nikki said as she and Nancy left; when they got back to the flat, Jake was just coming out of the bathroom. Nancy took Nikki's coat off before Nikki went running into the bedroom while Nancy put the coats away; she sighed as she sat on the sofa with jake next to her.

"Where's mom?"

"Went out with Mandy and Holly with Caitlin"

"Okay"

"You okay?"

"Why arent you working?"

"Day off; Nance, what's wrong?"

"Nothing"

"You can talk to me you know?"

"I know"

"So what is it?"

"It's nothing; can you look after Nikki tonight? Sarah and John Paul want me to out with them"

"Course i will; your mom's out tonight too so i've got Caitlin"

"Thanks; i'm gonna have a shower, will you keep an eye on her?"

"Yeah"

As Nancy stood up, she went really dizzy and then collapsed; she came round a few seconds later to find Jake kneeling over her and she could hear Nikki crying in the background.

"W...what happened?"

"It's okay, take it easy..."

"Jake..."

"You collapsed and hit your head; i've called an ambulance"

"I dont..." As she tried to sit up again, she felt sick and dizzy again.

"It's okay, just like back down"

A while later, Jake had left Nikki with Sarah while he went with Nancy to the ambulance; when they arrived, Becca was waiting for them after leaving Caitlin with Mandy. Nancy was taken through to a cubicle where her head wound was checked and dressed and the usual test were done; Nancy slowly dozed off and when she came round, Becca was holding her hand.

"Hey, you okay?"

"Where's Jake?"

"he went home to look after Nikki and Caitlin; what happened?"

"I dont know; i went really dizzy and the next thing i know, i'm on the floor and i could hear Nikki crying and Jake saying he'd phoned an ambulance"

"Miss Hayton, how are we feeling?" The doctor asked as she entered the cubicle and stood at the end of the bed.

"My head's thumping"

"That's not surprising; it was quite a bump you had. Are you feeling sick or dizzy?"

"Not really..."

"Okay, well we're just waiting for your test results to come back and hopefully we'll find out what made you collapse"

"Okay..."

"Thanks Doctor" Becca said before the doctor left and she turned back to Nancy.

"Is there anything you're not telling me?"

"Like what?"

"Well you've hardly been yourself lately, have you?"

"You mean, have i taken something?"

"No"

"Well i havent, i promise; i wouldnt be that stupid"

"I know, i'm sorry"

"I've just been tired..."

"Anything else?"

"A little nauseous i guess"

"Okay, well lets just wait and see what the doctor says, yeah?"

"Okay..."

"Just go to sleep for a bit, i'm not going anywhere"

As Nancy dozed off again, Becca watched on; a couple of hours later, Nancy awoke as the doctor came back into the cubicle.

"I'd like to speak to Miss Hayton alone please"

"I want my mom to stay"

"Okay; we've had your results back and it shows you are 4 weeks pregnant. Did you know?"

"No"

"Well, we're gonna keep you in overnight because of the head wound and we've o=got a midwife coming down to do an ultrasound to check the baby"

"Okay..."

"And we'll move you up to the overnight ward as soon as we can"

"Okay"

As the doctor left, Nancy turned to her mom adn gripped her hand tightly.

"Four weeks ago...that was when jay took me away for the night to celebrate me finishing the course"

"So it wasnt planned?"

"No, we just...got carried away; god, how could i have been so stupid?"

"Hey, you're not"

After the midwife had done the ultrasound, Nancy was transferred up to the overnight ward; the next day, Nancy awoke to see Justin sitting at her side, asleep in the chair. As she moved, Justin awoke and sat up as he took her hand; she groaned a little as she sat up and stared at him.

"Hey"

"How long have you been there?"

"Since last night; your mom came home and i came up. You were spark out so i left you to sleep; how you feeling?"

"Sore and my head's thumping a little; Jay..."

"How we feeling Miss Hayton?" The nurse asked she came round to check on her.

"Still got a headache but i'm fine"

"That's good; the doctor will be round this afternoon and all being well, he'll discharge you"

"Okay"

As the nurse left, Nancy turned back to Justin.

"What were you gonna say?"

"Four weeks ago we went away..."

"Yeah i remember"

"And something happened; we...we made a baby"

"Your...?"

"Yeah; 4 weeks"

"Wow; is that why you?"

"Yeah"

"How about we talk about it later when we get home?"

"I'd like that..."

They looked as Becca came into the room, holding Nikki in her arms as she cried.

"Hey baby" Nancy said as she held her arms out and wrapped them around her daughter as Becca put her on her lap and sat on the other chair at the side of the bed. "It's okay; mommy's here"

As Nikki continued to cry, Nancy held her close to her as she kissed her forehead; slowly Nikki started to stop and looked up at her mom.

"I was scared mommy"

"I know baby, not half as much as i was though; i'll be back home later, i promise"

"I had bad dream mommy"

"Oh baby; what was it about?"

"You wouldnt wake up and daddy couldnt wake you and you werent moving" she wept.

"Hey, it's okay; mommy's fine. Sssh"

She kissed her forehead and held her close as she wept; a while later, she kissed Justin and Nikki before they left. Becca helped her get changed before she lay back in the bed and held her mom's hand as she looked at her.

"Did you tell Justin?"

"Just before you and Nikki came in; we're gonna talk about it properly when i get home"

"Has anyone been round to see you?"

"The nurse earlier; the doctor's coming later on"

"And how are you feeling?"

"I've still got a bit of a headache but apart from that, i'm fine physically..."

"But?"

"I'm scared and confused about the baby"

"You said you wanted another baby six months ago"

"Yeah but you made me realise that i wouldnt be able to cope and all chance of having a career would disappear for another couple of years"

"That was six months ago and i didnt mean it; just take some time to think about it"

"I will"

She slowly dozed off again for another couple of hours as Becca watched on.

After the doctor had been round and discharged her, Nancy and Becca headed back to the flat where she sat on the sofa with her arms wrapped around her daughter as she kissed her forehead.

"I'm sorry mommy scared you baby"

"Are you okay now?" Nikki asked as she looked up at Nancy.

"I'm fine; where's your daddy?"

"He went out so granddad Jake looked after me; he went in there" she pointed towards Becca's bedroom.

"Okay baby"

Nancy kissed her forehead again before looking up as Becca as she sat next to her and put a drink on the table in front of them.

"Thanks..."

"How you feeling?"

"Better; i just have to tell Jay how i'm really feeling dont i?"

"Yeah and he'll understand"

"I hope..."

"He will"

Nancy sighed as Justin came back and sat next to her, wrapping his arm around her as he kissed her and Nikki; she looked up at him as Becca came in the room and gently lifted Nikki up and took her into Nancy's room.

"Jay, we need to talk?"

"About the baby?"

"Yeah; there's something i havent told you"

"What's that?"

"Six months ago, at New Year, i thought i was pregnant and i'd got it into my head it would be a good thing but then i talk to mom and i realised it wasnt the right time; it was a false alarm but if i felt like that six months ago, what makes it different now?"

"I know you're scared but i think having a brother or sister for Nikki might be what she needs"

"And what about us? My career, your job...?"

"We'll work something out"

"We'll, when yiu've figured it out, let me know; i'm gonna go to bed"

He kissed her forehead again before Nancy went into the bedroom; Becca kissed her forehead too before leaving the room as Nancy laid in the bed with the duvet over her, trying hard not to cry.

The rest of the holidays went by and it was now Nikki's first day at pre-school; Nancy was now 10 weeks pregnant but hadnt told anyone else. The truth was, she was still unsure about what to do; she now had a teaching job at Hollyoaks Comprehensive and it was something she was proud of. As Nikki came running out of the bedroom in her uniform, Nancy choked back the tears before Nancy stood up as Nikki ran and jumped into her arms.

"You look beautiful baby..."

"I think we need a picture" Becca said as she pick up the camera. Nancy and Nikki smiled as Becca took the picture before Nancy turned to her daughter.

"Right, we have to get you going so mommy can go to work..."

"Okay mommy; is nanny and daddy coming?"

"Daddy can't baby"

"But nanny will" Becca said before she went into her room.

Nancy and Becca held each of Nikki's hand as she skipped inbetween them; at the nursery, Nancy hugged her daughter teardully before watching as she ran inside. That afternoon, Nancy waited outside as Nikki came running out and jumped into Nancy's arms; she kissed her before they headed back towards the village.

"Did you enjoy your first day baby?"

"Me missed you mommy"

"Me too baby; did you make any friends"

"Yeah"

"Good; how about we go and see daddy and mommy will treat you to a milkshake?"

"Yay"

"Come on then cheeky"

"Me not cheeky"

"Daddy..." Nikki called as they went into Il Gnosh; Justin came out from behind the coiunter and crouched down as Nikki ran into his arms.

"You look beautiful baby; i'm sorry daddy couldnt be there for you this morning. Did you have fun?"

"Yeah; can i have milkshake daddy?"

"Let me see; you been a good girl?"

"I always a good girl daddy"

"Course you are; what flavour would you like?"

"Banana please daddy"

"Okay baby; go and sit down with mommy and i'll bring it right over"

She hugged Justin and kissed him before going to sit down with Nancy; Justin brought Nikki's milkshake over before going back to work as Becca came in and got a drink before sitting with Nikki and Nancy.

"Nanny" Nikki said with a huge smile on her face.

"Hiya Nikki; did you have fun today?"

"Yeah..."

"She made some friends didnt you baby?" Nancy said.

"Yeah"

"Wow; how about you Nance?"

"Tiring but rewarding..."

"Would you rather talk about it later?"

"There's not really much to talk about; there's a bit of awkwardness with Mrs Webster but that's it"

"What did she say?"

"Tried to pretend that what happen five years ago didnt happen"

"You cant let it affect your job; when you see her, just be pleasant and the rest of the time, it doesnt matter about her. You've proved that you have..."

"Can we do this later?" Nancy said as she moved her head in Nikki's direction.

"Course"

"Where's Caitlin?"

"With your granddad; Jake's working and i was in the flat looking out the window when i saw you come in here"
