Chapter One

Manchester Airport. 9.17am. Thursday 29 March 2007. Flight 1092 arrives from Ibiza, exactly on time.

People begin to appear from the plane's connecting tunnel into the airport - mostly groups of friends stumbling along, still hung over from their last night clubbing in Ibiza.

Among them is a man, about 30 years old, with short brown hair. He is dressed in jeans, trainers and a black leather jacket. He carries a small rucksack. As he heads to passport control, no-one gives him a second glance. He looks nothing out of the ordinary - apart from his piercing eyes.

"Your passport please, sir?" asks a woman behind the glass screen.

The man unzips his pocket and hands it to her.

"Thank you", she says, glancing at it and giving it back to him.

Next comes the tougher bit. He'd done this plenty of times, he had it down to an art form. Just think of something completely unrelated - what Katy would make him for tea tonight, or the footie.

He swallowed, and looked straight ahead as he walked towards customs. What would the score be this Saturday then? Man-U 2, Arsenal nil. Or maybe 3-0 if Ronaldo was still on top form. He didn't even glance at the group of customs officials, who were standing observing the passengers walking past.

After what seemed to be the longest ten seconds of his life, it was over. He was through, safe, he had held his nerve. He carried on walking to the taxi rank, his expression unchanged.

Outside in the cold air, the sunshine poured down on him. He took a deep breath and exhaled, feeling the adrenaline coursing through his veins.

1000 grams of the purest cocaine sat in his bag.

He felt invincible.

Chapter two

"Alright Jay?"

"Yeh, you?" said Justin.

"Close the door", said Warren.

Justin shut the door to Warren's office.

"You wanted me to do a job for you mate?" said Justin.

"Yeh, that's right. Go down to Il Gnosh, and get me a sandwich."

Justin frowned. "Is that it?"

"Actually no, get me a coffee as well", said Warren.

"No, ok...but I meant - is that all you called me over here for?"

Warren walked over to Justin and put his hand on his shoulder. "Listen, you do as I tell you and you'll be working on the bigger jobs in no time, alright?"

"Yep", said Justin.

"Good lad", said Warren, handing Justin a tenner.

Warren sat down again, his feet on the desk. He looked at the CCTV, and saw Louise coming up the stairs. He grinned. The drugs were all taken care of - now he just had to get the girl.

Chapter three

"Hello Louise!"

"Hi Claire, is Warren about?"

"Yeah, he's in the office, doing nothing as usual!"

Warren got up and stood in the doorway of the office. "Alright Lou? You look nice today", he said.

"Oh, thanks!" said Louise, smiling and looking down. "I'm embarrassed!"

"I wouldn't be", said Claire. "He says that to all the girls."

"Yeh? Apart from you Claire", said Warren. "Now do me a favour and phone the delivery man - he was supposed to be here two hours ago."

"Warren, I'm running this place! If you think you can order me around..."

"...Fine", said Warren. "If you want a club with no booze that's your choice. I'm just trying to help."

"Ugh, since when", said Claire, storming into the office and slamming the door.

Warren laughed. He walked behind the bar and leaned over it, facing Louise. "So, what can I do for you, Miss Summers?"

"Nothing, I just came to tell you that I'm moving into the Evissa flat."

"Yeh? It's a dump up there isn't it?"

"Yeah, but I can sort it out. I just wanted to check it was ok with you, since you own 50%..."

"Yeh course!" said Warren. "With one condition".

"What's that?" asked Louise.

"Come out with me tomorrow night. We can have a drink here and then have dinner or go clubbing".

Louise smiled in spite of herself. "Are you asking me out?"

"Yeh, you could say that", said Warren. He touched Louise's cheek lightly. "Well?"

Louise leaned in towards him over the bar, so their lips were almost touching. "I might see you tomorrow at 7 then", she said, smiling.

"I can't wait", said Warren, moving closer to Louise, almost kissing her. He could smell her perfume, it was intoxicating.

Louise lingered for a moment, then suddenly pulled away. "Good! Bye Warren!" She laughed, turned and walked down the stairs.

Warren watched her go. She was gorgeous, he had wanted her for so long. He'd had plenty of girlfriends, but none of them had really meant anything. But there was something about Louise, she was different.

"Alright boss!" Justin ran up the stairs, interrupting his thoughts. "A BLT and large coffee", he said, holding up the Il Gnosh bag.

Chapter four

"Did you see Warren about the flat?" asked Carmel, as Louise walked into Evissa.

"Yes, thanks", said Louise.

Carmel looked at her. "You look dead happy!! What's going on?"

Louise smiled and looked down. "Nothing!"

"Louise!! Tell me!! Pleeeaaase!!" begged Carmel.

"Warren asked me out on a date!"

"Oooh, really!! You lucky thing, Warren's dead nice in't he!!"

Louise smiled. "Well, I don't know about that - but I'm not looking for a nice guy at the moment - I just want some fun!"

"It's so unfair!! You've got the two most gorgeous guys in Hollyoaks fighting over you and I've got no-one!"

"Awww, Carmel - you'll find someone! Maybe you could have Calvin - I'm not sure he's really my type." The two girls laughed.

"But you've only been on a few dates", said Carmel. "You've got to choose one of them soon you know!"

"I know", said Louise. "But I'm pretty sure which one it'll be", she said, smiling again and going into the office.

The door opened and Mercedes walked in. "Alright sis? I'm here for my complimentary manicure", she said, sitting down.

"Mercy! What's complimentary mean?"

"It means free, you twerp! What's up? You look like someone died."

"Nothing - it's just - Louise has all the blokes fighting over her, and I'm dead lonely", said Carmel.

Louise walked back out into the salon.

"Which blokes?" asked Mercedes.

"Calvin and Warren!!" said Carmel.

"Carmel, do you mind?" said Louise, embarrassed.

"No contest", said Mercedes. "It's gotta be Warren. He's dead good in bed!"

"Mercedes!!" shrieked Carmel, crossing herself. "When did you and Warren...you know?!"

Mercedes suddenly looked embarrassed. "Er...well it were before me and Russ, obviously", she said.

Louise looked at her, shocked. "So you and Warren...slept together?!"

"A few times, yeh", said Mercedes. "It were dead sexy", she giggled.

"Oh", said Louise. She looked away, frowning. "So what happened?"

"Well", said Mercedes, smiling wickedly. "Once we went back to his place and he tied me..."

"Stop!! I didn't mean dirty details!!" said Louise, holding up her hand. "I mean - why did you break up?"

Mercedes scowled. "Ugh, I caught him in bed with another woman, the cheating scumbag", she said.

Louise looked down. Was there any girl in the village Warren hadn't slept with?

Chapter five

It was the next morning. Justin trudged up the stairs in The Loft and collapsed on the sofa. He was hung over after a night out in Chester with Warren.

Warren came out of his office with a bucket and a mop. "Jay, go downstairs and clean the bogs for me."

Justin groaned. "Mate, go easy...my head's killing me."

Warren laughed. "Are you serious? You've let me down, Justin."

Justin looked at him. "Why?"

"I thought you'd be able to handle your booze a little bit better than that."

Louise came up the stairs. "Louise could drink you under the table!" said Warren.

Louise laughed. "Hey, I don't know about that - I'm a bit out of practice these days", she said.

"Justin, go on", said Warren. "And it better be done in half an hour."

Justin stood up. "Sh*t...!!" He grabbed the bucket from Warren and threw up in it.

"Ugh!!" Louise grimaced. "That's disgusting!!"

Warren looked at him. "You've got a lot to learn. Now get downstairs."

Justin traipsed downstairs.

"Sorry about that," said Warren. "So what's up babe?"

"I just wanted to check you were still on for tonight?"

"Yeh course I am!"

Louise smiled. "Good! So I'll see you later then."

"Ok."

Chapter five (continued)

"Warren! Warren!!" Katy ran up the stairs.

"Katy! Hey, what's up?" asked Warren.

"Katy are you ok?!" said Louise.

"I tried to call you, but your phone's off...I had a bad nightmare, it really freaked me out!" Katy burst into tears.

"Hey, come here!" said Warren, hugging Katy to him. "Shhhh, it was only a dream!"

Louise silently waved goodbye to Warren and went downstairs.

"What was it about?" he asked, stroking her hair.

Katy sat down on the sofa. "That foster home - when they locked me in the room under the stairs. Only this time..."

"What?"

"You weren't there to protect me, they just left me there, for days...and you never came", Katy sobbed.

"Katy, I'll always be there for you, I swear." said Warren. "You know that!"

Katy looked at Warren. "Yep, I know", she said, and smiled faintly.

Warren smiled. "That's better. Come on, how about lunch at Il Gnosh?"

"That would be nice."

"Yeh? Come on then", said Warren. "What am I gonna do with you eh?"

"Hey!" said Katy, hitting him playfully. Warren grinned, and put his arm round his little sister.

"Justin! What happened to you? You look...awful!" exclaimed Katy, as he appeared from the toilets.

Warren laughed. "Justin's a lightweight", he said.

"Right, well...see you later", said Katy.

"Bye", said Justin. He looked down, annoyed. Why did Katy have to see him looking like that?

Chapter six

Later that day, Warren was lounging in his office, with his feet on the desk. He looked idly at the CCTV screen, and saw Calvin coming up the stairs.

Warren rolled his eyes. He got up and went to the door of his office. "PC Valentine, what a lovely surprise", he said sarcastically. He walked over to the bar. "What can I get you?"

"A JD - double shot", said Calvin.

Warren laughed. "Hard day?"

"You could say that."

"Right, well I'd love to stay and chat, but I've got work to do", said Warren.

"Yeah, no worries." Calvin pulled a newspaper out of his bag and put it down on the bar. "Hmmm, "Police crack down on local nightclubs with drugs raids", he said, reading the headline, and looking at Warren. "I've been hearing things about The Loft recently."

"Yeh? Well you'd better speak to Claire then, it's her name above the door", said Warren.

"But...see I've got a feeling, if anything's going on here, it's probably got your name written all over it", said Calvin. "Call it intuition."

"Is that right?" asked Warren. He leaned in towards Calvin. "I hope this hasn't got anything to do with the fact that I'm going out with your girlfriend tonight".

"She's not my girlfriend, alright? We went on a couple of dates", said Calvin, trying to hide that he was upset.

"Funny, that's not what you were saying last week", said Warren. "But if it's any consolation mate, you never had a chance anyway. She's practically gagging for me."

Calvin turned to go. "Right, well - keep an eye out for any drug dealing at The Loft".

"You can count on me", said Warren. "Oh...and I'll tell Louise you said hi", he grinned.

Warren watched as Calvin walked downstairs.
His smile faded, and he reached for his mobile.

"Carl, it's me. You better come and get that coke - and the smack too."
"Yeh - the local copper's been giving me grief."
"I'll see you in an hour then mate."

He hung up.

Chapter seven

Louise stood gazing out of the window in Evissa, with a mug of tea in her hands. She thought about her date with Warren tonight, and her stomach flipped. Whenever she thought of him her heart skipped a beat. She'd been fighting her feelings for him for so long, but she couldn't resist anymore. He was so strong, intense, tough...but he had another side, that hardly anybody saw. Underneath it all he could be soft, vulnerable almost... and she knew he'd do anything to protect her. She had seen that side of him today when Katy had been upset. Louise sighed. She wanted to melt just thinking about him. It felt strange, admitting these feelings to herself, when she had tried to deny them for so long.

Suddenly she saw another man walking through the village. She couldn't place him, but she knew she'd his face before, somewhere - in Ibiza. Then she clicked. It was Carl, he'd been a mate of Warren & Sean's, when they did all the drug dealing in Sean's clubs. She watched him walk through the village...and into The Loft. Louise frowned.

Warren opened the safe in his office and took out two large packages. "Jay, shut the door."

"What's this?" asked Warren, opening the package and pulling out a smaller, clear packet.

Justin looked at it, shocked. "Er...I dunno, coke?"

"Heroin."

"Serious?"

"Yeh. Lesson number one - never touch it, it's for smackheads. You start on this stuff and you're done for."

"What's in the other..."

"That's 1000 grams of coke", said Warren. "My mate's coming round to pick it up."

"Why are you telling me this?" asked Justin.

"It's about time you started working for me on the big jobs", said Warren, putting his hand on Justin's shoulder.

"Yeah - mate I'd love to!"

"I know. You can make big money in this if you've got your head screwed on. And I trust you. But you should know something now", said Warren, leaning closer into Justin. "When you're working for me, there's one thing that I don't tolerate."

Justin gulped. "What's that?"

"Disloyalty."

"Mate, you can trust me, honest."

Warren laughed. "Yeh?"

"Yeah!" said Justin.

"I hope so", said Warren, handing Justin £80.

"What's this for?"

"You've got the night off. I want you to take my baby sister, Katy, out for a meal. She needs cheering up, and I'm not going to be here."

Justin looked at Warren in disbelief. "Really? What about Claire?"

"Leave Claire to me", said Warren.
