im currently doing my dissertation as part of my final year at uni.
just wondered if anyone had any info concerning black fashion and style in Britain from the 1950's up to today, and any factors that contributed to the change in style over the years???? thanks x

I'd really rather not humour this with an answer- but Catherine, I have to ask what on earth the title of your dissertation is, that you seem so insistent on gauging opinion on something so mundane and backwardly racist as a person's skin colour determining their nationality and even- God forbid- dress sense.

Or are you simply a wind-up merchant?

This is David Brent-esque positive discrimination at its worst- witnessing the clumsy pitfalls of someone who tries so excrutiatingly hard NOT to be seen as a racist, that ironically they can't be viewed in any other way.

I found her question to be perfectly reasonable. It is worth a civil reply.

so did I find it a reasonable question Chica78 (and a very common dissertation subject actually).
There is mothing 'mundane' or 'backwardly racist' about the study of how black fashion has been influenced and changed over time by media/economic and social influences etc.

Whether it be the influence of 'black culture' on todays fashion or the influence of rock music
on todays fashion, any fashion/styling course will have you look at the past and study the trends (and reason for those trends) however 'mundane' you may feel they are.

How you can call it 'positive discrimination' is beyond me.

I totally agree with Chica78, it is backwardly racist. What I suggest to Catherine is either stop winding us up, be more positive in your outlook or change your Tutor who is obviously a wimp (Male or Female) who thinks this is cool - its not, its rubbish.

However,if you want to progrees I can write you a brief synopsis -

Peoples of sub-saharan genetic background in the UK were normally dressed in the UK in the 1950's. However, over the years Afro-American culture has totally hi-jacked Afro-UK culture so now its all a big mush.

Im sorry but i didn't find it racist atall. The irony is its now an 'Issue' because you have gone and made it an issue over race when its not.

Its coming back to the issue of pollitical correctness, and I have made my feelings clear about what i think of these types of people.

It was made an issue because it was obvious to make it an issue. Its not outwardly racist but it lends towards more divergence rather than convergence of the peoples from the so called variuos groups. What I'm worried about here is further "ghettoisation" of issues and people.
