Plans emerged yesterday about the goverenments plans to make every 18yr.old swear an oath to the Queen and pledge allegence to England. Supposedly, this is an attempt to make more young people interested in voting and make ethnic minorties feel like they are "truly part of England."

I find it disturbing that in this day and age the government still thinks that "citizenship" is a healthy way of life..

The government now has citizenship on the agenda and everybody has already heard about i.d. cards... Do we really want to become a nation which bays to the government?

Take America, for example, every student at the start of the day has to take part in singing the national anthem and every classroom has an American flag insdie it. Is this not dangerous? Imagine what the government could do if everyone worshipped it? What would be ignored? Would we not loose control over our lives? Would Queen, Country and Government not become medevil celestial beings, second to God!? GOD! if you don't believe in one....? Eek

I'd swear allegiance to someone cool who isn't a rebranded-German & gained everything they have by being born into an archaic class system. Guess I'll have to go elsewhere...

They want to make people swear an oath to the Queen to get them interested in voting?? Swearing an oath to a parasitic, anachronistic, unelected figure to get them involved in voting. Oh sweet irony. Anyway, how can they MAKE all 18 year olds swear an oath? If I was that age again you wouldn't get one out of me and what could they do about it?

Exit, pursued by a bear.

They'll probably reintroduce the tradition of locking people in the Tower as traitors if they refuse to swear allegiance. I daresay the old 'off with his/her head' punishment will be considered a touch too barbaric even for this Government. Roll Eyes

Done it in the Boy Scouts, but know better now. Free Will, Free Mind, Free Country. Oh and what is the the Queen and here family. More honour swearing an oath to Eastenders. At least the people on that show are no so disfunctional and inbred.

Was this a quotation from another source, sisalto, or your own words?

I always thought the Queen was the Queen of the UK, not just England, so as a Scot find this idea particularly insulting.

That aside, I almost wish I was 18 again so I could refuse to take this oath. What 18 year old could honestly say they feel anything for the outdated system of Monarchy and its out of touch representative? Whether or not she is a recycled German is irrelevant; nationality is not the issue here but the idea that someone can be born to a life of privilege and be bowed and scraped to all her life as if she and her freeloading family are somehow above the likes of us, the Great Unwashed.

Although I would never swear an oath to anyone, with the possible exception of Nelson Mandela, it is a great idea to get people more interested in voting. After all if they brought this into a manifesto, think how many people would go out to vote to make sure it doesn't get passed into law?

Well as the Queen is head of state, and people would be swearing alegience to the country as embodied by the state then I have no problem with that.

Afterall if you do not feel that you should support the country you live in - why are you here?

The only problem I have is that an oath is only as good as the person who swears it - unfortunatly there are few people who would take the idea of an oath seriously nowadays

Is it your contention that we should support 'our country' regardless of personal conscience? Are we to become mindless automatons, backing every decision the Governmet or Head of State make, good or bad?
'Our country' has done many things over my lifetime that I could not and did not support. I could not swear an oath of allegiance that did not allow me to disagree with 'our country's' policies when necessary.

A "re-branded German"? Would it be more acceptable to you if the Queen was of non-European descent,a zulu perhaps?

Do not confuse supporting one`s people with whom one has blood links to with supporting the Blairite police state.

Done it years ago when taking HMs shilling. If required to do so again I will happily say some words on the proviso that the Prime Minister presents himself voluntarily to the ICC and faces justice for his clearly criminal acts.

Who told you American kids have to swear anything or sing anything in school? They do have a flag and the littlest ones recite the pledge of alegiance. But its voluntary and I for one rarely did once I figured out the words. There was never any consequence for sitting it out. As for the national anthem, its an extremely difficult piece to sing and is never forced on anyone in public schools. Get your facts straight. This is a legitimate thread and needn't be muddled up with rumors and hearsay.

It is important to differintate between swearing loyalty to the British nation / country and the British government. The politicans at westminister are the biggest bunch of traitors there are in this country. They've done hardly any good, and so much damage to Britain since the end of world war 2 its insane.

I've yet to see or hear anything of this outside this thread. Just another paranoid rumour mill, I suspect. If not it is surely not an effective campaign platform as none of the candidates are touching it. For the record, no such oathe will ever be "forced" from my lips.
