Volunteering at a major drug charity has made me wonder about our policies towards drug counciling. They give out as many needles as a drug user wants and do not demand any back. It is the policy for needles to be returned when collecting fresh ones but this rarely happens. So what used to be drug users being at risk from infections from repeatedly using the same needles has turned in to vast amounts of drug user being safe from infection but putting the wider public at risk from needles not being disposed of properly. Should not the agencies involved be demanding needles back in exchange for new ones? Surely binmen and the wider public should be a primary concern rather than people who decide to use drugs.
