I'll happily give a donation and wear my poppy with pride.
I'd far rather give to a charity which helps the old and not so old service personel. Can you imagine what would happen to the funds if the govt got their hands on them?? Most of it would go up in the political smoke of targets and health and safety investigations!!
As for securing your poppy, ditch the straight pin, use a small safety pin. Pin through the lapel from the back, leaving a small 'bar' at the front. Pop the poppy stem behind this bar, ensuring that the 'twig' on the stem is below the bar. Works for me!!!!
(good grief, where did all these new smilies come from?? )
trouble with all this is that most of the money goes to keeping retired Ruperts in highly paid jobs in the British Legion rather than to the benefit of deserving ex-servicemen.
Pity there isn't a truely charitable source of poppies.

I used to be able to feel that way until my sister went and had sproglets. NOw I am forced to care about the future.

I know what you mean I'm trying to avoid human beings that may trap me like that.

Originally posted by Amos Parr: One thing that has heartened me in recent years is the improved observation of public silence at 11am on 11/11.
We do it at our school, and the kids observe the silence respectfully in the middle of their morning break. I am told it happens in shops & other workplaces.
I cannot remember this happening until about five years ago.
It's a pity that the gesture is devalued by the spurious silences for those who haven't willing sacrificed their lives for others (tsunami, 9/11, 7/7 etc).
To me the right to rememberance through a symbolic silence is only due to those who knowingly put themselves in harms way.
I suspect it moved to 11/11 from the tradional remberance sunday service because it is easier to persuade people to be quiet for a minute than to get their bums of seats and visit the local cenotaph.
