I've just been down to the site today, very impressive if you ask me, as ever, basically i'd have to say very early on that one, as you can tell from reading the forums a lot of people will be heading down around 8/9ish, so aim for around there i'd say,

How can you get spare golden circle tickets?

Also, another forum said that if you get down there early enough sometimes they just let you in the golden circle.. is that true? And how early?

you would have a better view from the gold circle but i dont think it would ruin much for you...
