Personal view coming....
I actually thought that it was quite brave of a man in the public eye, with his image, to admit that he couldn't actually shoot the deer. Don't care if it was hype or a PR stunt. It does not change the fact that he is a darned good chef who is pushing barriers with this programme, perhaps it is not all his concept but it does elicit debate and interest from all sides and that alone cannot be a bad thing can it.....answers on a forum near to you. Ive actually mentioned this in another section....it does seem odd that Gordan will buy Fois Gras from the French and yet couldn't kill a wild deer?....I would have admired him more if he had boycotted the French version of Froi Gras......but I suppose its keeping punters happy.

I really enjoyed this feature of last night's programme, as I am a keen amateur deer stalker and an occasional hunter of African game.

A sudden attack of "buck fever" - such as the one suffered by Mr Ramsay - is very common, even amongst regular hunters. It happens to me all the time.

"Buck fever" is caused by adrenaline pouring into the bloodstream in response to a stressful situation. Symptoms include tunnel vision, soaring blood pressure, racing heartbeat, increased strength but reduced dexterity and obvious muscle shakes.

This is great if you are fighting a deer hand to hand, but obviously not ideal when you are trying to deliver a precise shot with a rifle.

Mr Ramsay did exactly the right thing in declining to shoot - he obviously felt that the chances of wounding the animal were just too high. No experienced guide will criticise a client for passing up a shot.

Beyond this, the feature was very informative and well-balanced.

It showed a dedication to animal welfare, the high level of skill involved in deer stalking and the precision required in putting a bullet right through a deer's vital organs - the heart of a small deer is litle bigger than an apple.

I feel that Mr Ramsay emerged from this feature with a good deal of credit. He faced a tough choice under stressful circumstances and his decision was the right one, showing due respect to the animal concerned.

Well done, Channel 4 - more like this please!

James

Wht GR did on last weeks show was nothing more than humanity and it showed him to have a heart
After that show I now see him more of a nice person than an ogre that is shown by meda. I am looking forward to tomorrow nights show and his son Jack learning how to target shoot.
Did anyone read the weekends papers where one of the lambs had been killed by a wild cat whilst at the Beckhams ? He could have used my lawn last week Smile it has bee cut now Wink

Channel 4 keep up the good wok.. this man is brilliant

Yeah, I have to admit that this image, the dead deer being carried through the restaurant did give me pause:

1. The fallen animal should be treated with respect - it is not a fashion accessory or someting to be used to shock people

2. This was a rather sadistic act, in that he subjected diners to a sight which they might rather not see - not much different from "flashing", really

3. Food hygeine would require keeping the animal's blood and hair out of this kitchen as far as possible. Deer should be skinned either in the field or in the deer larder, thus keeping mud, loose hair and so on out of the food chain

Rest assured that, when you have venison in a restaurant it will have been prepared by a trained person, as required by law, so it is totally safe and clean

You sound like a professional. Gordon is just playing at it. Spin and PR - shame.

What about him wielding the sword. I suppose he thinks he is a samurai warrior as well as a game hunter! Confused

I used to love GR - the shock element doesn't quite work for me.
