I have to question your wisdom in connection with the slaughter of the Turkeys that you have been tending with your children. Does this have more to do with the viewing figures of your TV programme or the educational growth of them. Whether it is one or both of them, have you not given any thought to the emotional attachments they may have formed with the Turkeys , in which case, you are confusing a childs mindframe with one of an adult. Please beware of your thoughtless actions. Children have vivid imaginations and nightmares.Has your wife appproved this action as I canot believe any good Mother would do this to her children.Have a heart and stop acting up for the cameras.

Unfortunately they all have names. NOT a good move in terms of animal husbandry and a mistake I might offer, Gary was kissed by the kids and poor anfanny is ridiculously titchy so he may escape and be the real pet. He's not orange though.....

I thought it is pretty wierd how horrified so many people are by what he is doing...
If you eat Turkey at Xmas, i do not understand what is so wrong about what Gordon is doing?

The only way most of us see a chicken/ Turkey is after it's been plucked and cleaned then shrink wrapped or in little pieces all wrapped in the supermarket. He is merely giving his kids an understanding of what actually happens.

When you concider that a lot of children now have zero idea about how food comes from - i think its ace...
and not to mension quite amusing too! Smile

Fine spaced we agree with you, er didn't actually notice anybody being "horrified" but maybe you think you are on the Jamie Forum and on the slaughter of lamb thread.... no matter, what I am saying is with little children (nobody here can say they are ANYTHING but little)it is NOT a good idea to give them names. THAT is all quite simply, they have identities now, Gary has been kissed, little antfanny is dead runty and therefore cute. The kids will be upset no matter how much they are being told they are for Christmas, when push comes to shove they will get hurt.

I agree with what you are saying about kids needing to know where food comes from see my posts on Jamie. esp. slaughter of lamb.

I don't find kids being upset that their 'pets' have to be killed and then them having to sit down and eat them amusing.

I'm a meat eater... but I'm not going to kill the family pet rabbits to make a pie from them *heaves*

That is just the sort of thing that would put your kids off eating meat.

Apologies, i should have made myself clearer -
I meant generally not just on this forum. It was a major talking point in work about the Turkeys Roll Eyes

I agree with your comments regarding giving them names. Although i found it mildly amusing he named them after his competition! Smile

Giving the turkeys names was definately a bad idea, it does make them seem like pets rather than farm animals. I think Gordon's kids may be a little too young to really understand what's going to happen.

I have been speaking to a friend about this, we live in the farming community, she says that they had names for lambs and stuff but ate them. The difference here is that where she was is a farm and life is very different as animals come and go, and they die of natural causes and this is part of your life and understanding. Have a few turkeys cooped up in your garden is very different, the kids will probably be very upset. I could be wrong but am interested to see. It would be awful if it was a con and they have different turkeys, How many are going for bluddy dinner there ??

That was the first thing DH said when the turkeys were introduced - how many's he bl**dy feeding on Christmas day then?! We had a 10lb turkey last year and that fed 6 easily. Maybe Gordon's planning a New Year special on 'Turkey Leftovers'.

On the other hand Gordon is going to have to live with the fact that his kids might just decide to become vegetarian because of this. And being a chef, they hate veggies don't they? He will just have to live with that and there's nothing he will be able to do about it.

My son, who is 11 and a half years old, is most perturbed that Gordon plans to kill the turkeys. He says "If you are doing this for publicity please find a better idea". Of course your children are going to be upset when the time comes as its clear to see that they have become attached to the birds (as demonstrated by one of your daughters kissing "Gary") and they are almost like pets because they've been given names. Whether the birds were named or not is really irrelevant - I believe most children would find this very distressing. I hope you and your wife will be able to give all the children the comfort, time and attention they'll undoubltedly need after the dreadful deed.

I know I will probably be in tears myself as I am quite fond of them now, particularly Gary.

I am having partridge again tonight, I am very glad they were shot whilst still unknown to me. I have some "pet pheasants" who come into the garden to steal food and I am most upset when I hear gunfire! Big Grin
