What Gordon Ramsey did last night was sick. He has brought up those pigs like pets, its sick that he actually went through with it. I'm considering going vegetarian after the whole of last night's disturbing programme. I won't be watching it again.

You found it sick? Do you know how mass marketed meat is kept? Trinny & Susannah had a fantastic life. Gordon & his family did a fabulous job, so to did the abattoir.

Kept them as pets...No he always knew they would end up on the table and ensured his childern knew this.

If you found it so sickening, why watch?

having visited abbatoirs before Gordons pigs had a good ending......believe me most animals going for slaughter are not treated with any sort of dignity or respect.

I've got to admit that I couldnt actually watch that bit, but I totally respect Gordon for going to watch it.

I remember him making a point of telling his kids that they were only gonna have to pigs for a while and they (the pigs) seemed to have a happy life. Much better than those animals which are shown on other programs about this topic.

Flipping heck

Where do you think that shrink wrapped bacon in Tesco's comes from? Or do you just *conveniently* forget how it gets to your plate?

It's called reality and it happens every day. It's about time we woke up to how our food is produced and killed.

Yes Gordon Ramsey looked after his pigs well and yes he did the right thing and went with them when they were slaughtered (made good television for him and imagine what the viewers reaction would have been if he hadn't) They must have stopped the whole abattoir working to film that. Two pigs going to slaughtet in the most humane way possible!! I don't think so. Hundreds of animals go through abattoirs each day and if one thinks it like what was shown then think again. Go on any search engine, tap in slaughter house and see what really happens. I do think that any farmer who keeps there animals roaming free (so to speak) before the inevtiable happens are to be applauded but beleive me the minute those animals get on the lorries to go wherever they are going (cattle markets, visit one, humane, load of B******s or abattoirs) that is when the heartache really starts. One farmer I spoke to said it was in his own interest to keep his cattle in the best health possible in order to get the best price for them (silly me I thought it might have had something to do with the welfare of the animal itself). As for the killing itself being quick and painless, until someone gets stunned, strung up by the leg and their throat cut and lived to tell the tale then sorry I don't buy it. Surely there is some way around this barbaric act of cruelty. Why can't there be a professional marksman to come to the place where the animal has been reared and shoot it outright so it is killed straight away? As for the farmed animals, again its down to pure greed for money. This should be stopped and we can all do our bit and read on the packet how the animals have been reared. If nobody buys intense farmed food then surely they will have to stop doing it. Won't they?

I didn't want to watch but turned over my tv to channel 4 to watch Big Brother only to be confronted with it. I changed channels very quickly and found the whole thing very disturbing. I never cry but I was very upset for about an hour and am definitely now a vegetarian. Yes, I know that is how it works, animals are killed for us to eat, but as I had never seen it and had put it to the back of my mind before, I can't do that now.

Hi

Okay tis may have already been said but who swiches on a programme when they know it will contain violence. Ie killing of 2 pigs. that were very well looked after & knew they would be killed at the end.

All the regular viewers knew about this. Only the non regulars who dont understand it put in complaints, to ruin it for all the others.

What prats.!!!!

All i have to say.

'Why can't there be a professional marksman to come to the place where the animal has been reared and shoot it outright so it is killed straight away?'

Its quite simple really - the EU says we cant! On farm slaughter has to be the most stressless way for the animal, but red tape has stopped farmers from using this route - so the slaughter house it has to be. If you dont like it tell the EU! Confused

Yes thats right ,the EU says and the UK jumps!!
In peasant areas of Spain as I've posted before, lambs and goats are strung up a tree and have their throats slit, and pigs are manhandled by groups of men to again have their throats slit before being spread out on a board.
You don't have the choice of switching off these images, you drive or walk past. When walking you can look away , but it's not advisable when driving!
We may not like to see these things on TV ,but you do have a button to press ,you don't have to watch, you can look at the cute lambs playing in the fields and pretend they have nothing to do with the clinically sealed packages in Tesco.
For goodness sake grow up, these things happen ,daily.Complain to your local MP,tell him GR is a nasty man ,don't you think the RSPCA would be the first to be on the front page of the SUN, "Gordon Ramsey in Horrific Pig Killing ,Children Scarred for Life."
Some people are so pathetic

Thatis how it is SUPPOSED to be done "huamne" killing is the term! Although that also sounds like an oxymoron.

It is interesting how many people dont undersatnd that to eat meat means to kill animals. What many vegetarians dont consider is that the more of them there are (and I am not denegrating personal choice) the less sheep, cows and pigs there will be. They are a commercial crop, sorry but its true. So campaign for humane slaughtering but not for vegetarianism.

You might think that the people choosing to watch this programme and contribute to the forum would have a real interest in food and cooking. Judging by the comments from the 'pooor ickle piggies' camp this is clearly not the case.
Why do you think that these animals are bred and reared in the first place? For people to eat! And why do you find it more disturbing when they end up on a plate after a decent cosseted life than if they had spent their lives in disgusting factory farm conditions?

Those of you who CLAIM to have been turned into veggies (or almost - I love that one) by the experience should perhaps ask yourselves how you previously thought that the meat on your plate came over all dead. Did you think the farmers just waited for them to die of old age?

One really disgusting thing about the whole episode though was the fact that the fresh blood was wasted instead of being caught in a bowl to make some smashing black pudding.
