Definatley.

Why do people complain? Tis is how meat gets on your plate (but the animals haven't hadsuch a luxury life as T&S). Deal with it unless you are a vegan (in which case surely you weren't watching), please, please, please don't complain. Even if you are a vegg don't compain, cuz I bet you were leather, use hand/face cream etc. etc. I could go on & on, but I will get boring......................

Why are people so worked up over 2 pigs? I couldn't have done it myself.. but i LOVE ham...
Because of my idiot president (i didnt vote for), we are shown kids dead, dying or missing limbs in a unjust war. And all people can do is whine about 2 pigs? give me a break... Next time you kill a fly in your house... scream... its a living being also, but cause you don't see the blood it doesn't bother you..

Why do people have to compare meat with war? They are two completely different issues. Respect other people opinions, and dont try to put them down.

No, I didn't scream. In fact, I'm quite amazed of how fast they killed the pigs.

Glitter, i wasn't comparing meat to war.. i was pointing out how silly it is to scream over 2 pigs dying when there are much worse things nightly on the tele...

i agree with wind. was pleasantly surprised at how quickly and efficiently the slaughter was dealt with. i was expecting it to be a lot worse, particularly with all the warnings given and fuss created ahead of the event. they're only pigs. get a grip. people get far too attached to animals and get all worked up about things like this, but then watch the news or read papers featuring images of mass murder and unimaginable acts of cruelty towards humans with relative ambivalence. it makes my blood boil Mad
would there have been such a reaction if GR had actually slaughtered one of his useless kitchen staff.....or is that not out of the ordinary in one of his restaurants Big Grin

I think it is important to let people know exactly what happens to animals to produce the end product ie meat. Otherwise meat is just an end product without the association of pain etc. At least then a person can make an informed decision! If it does not bother a person, that is their business if they wish to continue eating meat but I think it is wrong to hide that animals are actually slaughtered.

Today I witnessed the slaughter of approx 1800 sheep. Here are some answers to questions some of you may have:
Did they suffer? No. Each was rendered insensible to pain by electrocution before their throat was cut.
How can I tell? Easy. No rhythmic breathing, no corneal reflex(eyes no moving when touched), neck extended, limbs rigid all signs of an effective stun.
How long do they take to die? A sheep will bleed out in about 10 seconds. i.e almost all of it's blood will be drained. "Kicking" occurs during the second phase of the stun, known as the "clonic" phase. This ceases within a minute.

Enjoy your dinner. Wink

Thanks for your posts painfulpaintball. I know it sounds strange but after seeing the pigs killed I really needed to know just how the animals I eat are killed for food. (Yep - that does sound warped Wink)

Cheers

What scared me was the guy who was doing it, he looked crazed and as soon as I saw him and a meat hook I just thought texas chain saw massacre.

It did upset me though.

can i just say there is a lot of disrespect for individuals feelings, morals, beliefs and of course opinions in this thread. its rude and un called for.

i personally couldn't watch the slaughter but at the same time i don't disagree with it being shown there were plenty of warnings and every one had a choice

HCC there were a couple of threads generated by the slaughter on this forum, this was about the least representative. I agree with you regarding the warnings etc. In the Hugh FW prog that is currently running a similar episode showed the slaughter of two lambs, the warnings were also in situ and very clear. I love meat, if I had to kill my own I probably would have to do without, if that makes me a hypocrite I am sorry. I prefer to know what happens and leave it to the professionals to do the deed. I love iced cake but I can't do a professional job of icing so I leave that to the professionals as well, if you see what I mean. The F Word forum is usually quite light hearted so don't be put off visiting just because of one thread. Smile

i have read all the threads about the slaughter of t n s and i just can't believe the disrespect shown between members, i know every one has an opinion each to their own and all that but people are being directly rude and it saddens me people cannnot share their opinion on such a strong subject

I was put off for a while by the attitudes of some forum users and there are sites which I won't visit. There is no excuse for downright rudeness I agree. I just try to remember not to feed the trolls. Smile

I'm a veggie and I didn't flinch at all. My housemates were hiding their faces behind cushions and all sorts. Its in the public interest to know how food gets to the table, it doesn't just appear on the supermarket shelf! If people are squeamish about watching an animal be slaughtered why are they not squeamish about eating it afterwards? Meat is meat, theres nothing wrong with slaughtering an animal for food and it happens all over the world everyday. I thought it was done ina sensitive and informative way and made great telly and a great end to the series.

I agree, it really bugs me when meat-eaters shy away from the truth. If you're not prepared to watch animals being slaughtered, and if you couldn't do it yourself, don't eat meat. It's that simple. If you think it's terrible how much they suffer but chose to ignore that while you munch away at your ham and pickle sandwich that makes you a selfish ignorant person - you're choosing to ignore the suffering of another living being just so you can enjoy the taste of their flesh.
