I love GR and watching his show is pure entertainment BUT and its a big but...

If one is a top chef, shouldn't hygiene be on the top of your agenda? Then why is it, when GR tastes food in the kitchen, he either uses his fingers - food, mouth and than back to food! or a spoon, and again, food, to mouth and back to stir the food...

i saw this at least 3 times in last nights programme and to be honest it was a real turn off...

your thoughts and idea's please......... Roll Eyes

Yes i am a clean freak and also a dab hand in the kitchen (if i may say so myself!) but seriously, he's spreading his germs by doing that and its not nice!

Even if you didn't see him actaully doing it (if you taped it, watch it on a re-run!) be honest, to see someone taste the food and put their fingers back in, you must think is quite gross - no?! Eek

How many germs do you think the average cooking utensils harbour in comparison with Gordon's (probably recently washed) hands?

Assuming Gordon has no diseases, no cold sores, nothing that you can catch orally, then there's really no problem....the mouth is not an incredibly "germy" place.....let's face it, if it was we would all be poisoning ourselves every time we swallow....

My advice would be to sterilise all your cooking equipment, not just wash it, use gloves to handle all food, tape your mouth and nostrils shut so you can't breathe over the food you cook, wrap yourself in sterile cling film and THEN come back and slam one of country's top chefs.

I agree with Welshchick21. How do you know Gordon's hands have been recently washed? Maybe he went to the toilet, did wash his hands, but then touched the toilet doorknob which is well-known for harbouring zillions of bacteria - or picked his nose, or ran his fingers through his hair, or a million and one possibilities. How do you know he "has no diseases, no coldsores, nothing that you can catch orally"??? Eek

I accept that a kitchen can't be 100% sterile, but he should be setting a better example.

If you were to re-read my post I think you would notice that I said he PROBABLY washed his hands and I also said ASSUMING he has nothing you can catch orally....when I went to school those two words generally preceeded anything that isn't a certainty. Welsh schools have a lot to answer for.

But that's exactly my point - we have to assume all this but we can't be sure and therefore he shouldn't be using his fingers or licking the spoon. (When I said 'how do you know...' I didn't mean you PiNkY in particular, but rather 'how does one know...' except that using one these days sounds affected.)

And as for saying that the mouth isn't an incredibly germy place, does that mean you wouldn't mind a meal prepared by one of those cooks that was secretly filmed spitting in the food????

The man is doing as he was taught... tasting food.... Hygiene counts yes but in Ramsay's kitchen nothing takes precedance over the taste that's why he is as he is...

Gordon is on tv and you can argue he should set a better example but in reality he can do as he likes and the world over chefs will still taste with their fingers.

Some like it HOT. If you don't, get out of my kitchen

Its a sad fact that this country has gone into a state of total panic over "how clean and germ free" everything is!
Dont get me wrong I like a clean environment but its also been shown that alergies, particularily childhood ones , have increased greatly since this obsession took hold, along with cases of "food poisoning" and stomach upsets.
We are no longer giving our bodies the chance to build up a natural immunity to the relatively harmless germs that surround us on a daily basis and that have done since the year dot, so the first little "bug" our systems come across freaks it out to the extreme!!
I bet you taste food in a similar way to any "proffesional" cook or chef without a second thought and then feed it to your families!
Its time we went back to basics and stopped obsessing!!

Harsh Mad Pinky was givin her opinion in reply.

Yes.. you have to assume they wash their hands regularly... just as you're assuming he doesn't.

As Littlereddemon says.. we all do it (taste our food in the same way).. I have yet to work in a kitchen where that's not the norm.

Don't eat out if you're that paranoid.

IF the food is still beening cooked and is above 72c all the germs and bac would be distoyed and i would think any chef at his standaer always washes his hand when he enters a kitchen and in between diffrent foods if not he would have been caught out by now
