Having had a very heavy day with meetings and calls from depressed collegues I decided to open a bottle (or 2) of the old vino. As usual for a friday night I watched "Have I got news for you". I hadn't looked at the guest presenter so was delighted when our mate GR turned up. Poor old Gordon just as in his interview with the Ross man, he seemed so out of his depth, he did recover his dignity but oh our poor Gordon how I wanted him to shout what the **** are you thinking, that's not what I wanted. He has however further endeared me by showing his vunerable side. He knows what he knows and does it so well, he is so passionate about his field. I know that when people invade my area of expertise, (which is only my small home) I have standards and I have expectations and god forbid that you don't meet up with those standards. It only makes me appreciate where GR is coming from......This so sounds like I have fallen under the spell of GR. I didn't like him 2 years ago, I thought that he was pompous and self opinionated, (does that mean the same?) Did anybody else see the programme? What do you think of his performance? Do you still love the man despite everything?

Gordon is obviously doing his rounds promoting his image. I do have a lot of time for him portraying the hard Chef he is certainly passionate about food and does not suffer fools gladly, as we see on the US batch of his Hells kitchen. Loved the look of the hopeful chefs when Gordon came out for the first time. You could see them thinking who the hells this guy. Will also be opening nice bottle of wine. Cheers.

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that, who cares? ...He's a mile away and you've got his shoes.
He made himself look like an absolute dim-witted twit. He evidently can’t even read! The BBC should realise that Have I got News For You requires a razor sharp television presenter… not a cook; bring back Angus.
i didn't see it but it takes someone super-sharp and witty to take on paul merton & ian hislop. love GR but thought he was crap on jonathan ross. he just didn't seem to want to be there. he was quite funny on top gear, but didn't seem to be playing ball with jonathan. perhaps it had been a hard week in the kitchen....not that he would have had much time there given that his mug has been on every tv show going for the past two weeks.....oh well
Well it would be nice to have a presenter that could read autocue. The whole show is about being sharp and witty so therefore it's not good to have a complete numpty presenting. He was quite funny on Top Gear, but that show is more of a laugh and general mess about. All he had to do was drive a slow car round the track and joke about messing with speed cameras and clingfilm!
It just goes to show how spontaneous GR is in the kitchen. Give him his due though. Allegedly even Trevor McDoughnut found auto cue hard when it was first introduced. Like in the kitchen, or any area where expertise and skill is required, practice makes perfect. GR clearly wasn't comfortable and Nicki J's comments about needing a super sharp wit were spot on. Angus D has badly let himself down and some of the guest presenters have done a great job so he isn't indispensable. (are any of us?)

i agree with you lemon drop kid. if anthing i think that seeing how he was on have i got new for you and j.ross makes him seem human and i like him even more.
mind you, in my opinion boris johnson was the most entertaining of the presenters that i've seen (excluding angus of course and i haven't seen all the episodes). part of what made him funny was that he couldn't read an autocue, didn't have any kind of control of the panellists, and generally appeared to be completely out of his depth. but this appeared to work in his favour.....
The difference was that Boris knew how to have a laugh, both at himself and at others; he also has a political background which puts him in a good position for such a program.
A little off topic but, there has been a channel 4 prog called come dine with me. One of the contestants did a 70's type night. (she was quite old and sang music from west end musicals all evening from the 50's onwards). Starters were crisps and twiglets etc, prawn cocktail, and cheese and pinapple on sticks. I remember that steak Diane and black forest gateaux were all the rage in the mid 70's. Wine and cheese parties were the "thing to do" and party 7's, (Watney's red barrel) Now it seems that it is all BBQ's. Do you have any foods that you liked/disliked that sum up a particular decade?

There is only so much carbon you can eat. It usually ends up in the bin because by the time you remove the outer shell it is cold. So 70's revival food here we come.

I thought he was a bit wooden as well, they should get presenters who are used to presenting like on Loose Women when they replace Kaye Adams. Some people may be funny generally but give them an autocue & they collapse.

Bruce Foryth was funny, he normally gets on my wick bigtime but I was in stitches - particularly when they did the Iraq thing & he said higher, lower, higher with all the wanteds. I wish I'd recorded that one - Paul Merton said "I've waited 15 years for the show to be like this" !!!
