Hiya Ladybird, keep it very simple, try a light starter like stuffed mushrooms, (I know that life is too short to stuff a mushroom but a large breakfast mushroom stuffed with ham and stilton is great) or pate and toast or even the 70's favorite like prawn cocktail with an '07 slant like smoked salmon. For mains a chicken dish that can be cooked, kept warm and a sauce of one sort or another poured over, with new pots and veg, and for dessert a simple fruit dish served with cream, perhaps a simple forest fruit jelly, made with red wine. a simple cheese board for everyone to pick at at their leisure whilst talking afterwards with coffee if they want. Nothing complicated in the culinary sense as you need to concentrate on communication. They will get the idea that you can produce a wholesome meal and it will not get in the way of what is really important and that is you and their son. Good luck and let us know how you get on. Wink

Yes keep it simple Ladybird. My first meal for my husband(then boyfriend) parents ended in disaster. Not because of things going wrong, but down to their palette. I had previously asked their likes and dislikes so I knew roughly what to do and not to.

I worked like a good one in the kitchen! throwing looks of daggers if any of them entered my domain and at the end of the meal his Dad said 'Pie and chips would have done love'..........imagine my reaction!! Not only did I want to tell him to F off out my kitchen but F off out my house!!!!

Thank god we dont have to like our in laws....

Hey guys!

Thanks for ur suggestions..
I spent the whole night looking through various cook books, eventually decided on something i have cooked 100's of times-roast beef with beetroot and horseradish-figured they'd like it(who doesnt like a good roast dinner?!)can big the beef us with a marinade was thinking something simple like garlic, lemon and rosemary just served with some roast potatoes and fresh veg.I like the idea of the mushroom starter(would you have starter with roast dinner?), and the fruit jelly, sounds like a winner to me..

Thanks for your help guys, will let you know if it all goes wrong or if its a hit!

Yes NickiJ22 he is my husband! Thank god I didnt marry his Dad!! Ha Ha

I now know that there was no pleasing my Father in Law ( he passed away 6 years ago)as far as food was concerned!
Anything other than pie and chips, egg and chips and other things swimming in LARD was posh food out of his league.

Thank God that my Hubby didnt have any of his fathers traits!

I agree keep it simple starters soup, melon, prawn cocktail or stuffed mushrooms main meal no to heavy especially if you are doing a sweet.. roast is good dont be to heavy with potatoes. more vegs and then a sweet sorbet or something sweet. and if you wish to go the full hog.. cheese and biscuits for the end.
Good luck hun I hope it goes well for you Angel

Hi Ladybirdcook

Hows about a simple starter like Poetatoe picklets set in the middle of the plate, with some cucumber and smoked samon with a small serving of horseradish/ mixed with cream fresh.
Main course roast chicken with a difference no paxo stuffing get some fresh bananas, peaches, or mango, papaya place the fruit under the chicken breast skin and roast in the oven as normal, with new potatoes, veg. desert a warm chocolate sponge yummy. Wink
