give it a read!THE hit TV drama Shameless is to quit Gorton and move across Manchester to Wythenshawe in May.
Gorton has been home to the cast and crew of Shameless for four series but the decision has been made to move to a purpose-built set near Wythenshawe Hospital.
The Bafta award-winning drama, which follows the lives of the shambolic Gallagher family and their friends, was filmed on location in West Gorton along with studio sets inside a Salford warehouse.
But it has now been revealed that Shameless will now join the likes of Eastenders and Coronation Street in having a permanent home.
The chosen destination for their new home is the former Umbro building, now known as the Aviator Building, on the Roundthorn industrial estate.
It has been unveiled that the producers of the hit comedy, Company Pictures, have signed a five-year deal worth more than £1.2m to lease the new property.
A spokesperson for Channel 4, said: "We are now moving into purpose built studios and back lot in Wythenshawe but are not starting filming again for series five until May."
Channel 4 said the move was "because the series is doubling in length going to 16 episodes for series five - so having everything under one 'shameless village' makes complete sense."
The crew and cast even though warmly welcomed by Gorton residents have encountered trouble while filming.
In 2004, two 16-year-olds were issued with ASBO’s after their gang persistently interrupted filming of the show, harassing and intimidating cast and crew.
A Company Pictures spokesperson said: "It's a very exciting time for Shameless - getting its very own Shameless village.
"It will make filming much easier - and the cast will get proper dressing rooms."
Shameless, is the brainchild of writer and executive producer Paul Abbott, who based the characters on people from his childhood in Rochdale and their new home is currently under construction due to be completed in time for filming in May.
