The quality of writing in shameless is as good as it was when the show began, as far as i'm concerned. However, I won't deny the fact that the show wasn't as good as it was in season two, which as far as i'm concerned was it's strongest season. Mainly because the 'nicer' characters have left. Fiona, Steve, Kev, Veronica, Shiela and Marty. And they have been replaced mainly by the Maguires, who i'm not really fond off. I can't stand Shane, and Paddy annoys me too. However I think Mimi stands out as one of the best characters in the show. The increased violence is also something I dislike about the show. It's a good aspect of the show, but it seems now that the amount of people getting beating up seems to increase with every episode, which is largely due to the increased role of the Maguires. So in short, I don't think it's as good as it once was, and I was very pesimistic when I heard not only were Kev + Veronica leaving, but Sheila as well. However the show is still miles better than any other british television programme, and I hope it continues for at least a few more seasons.

i can understand people being annoyed at characters leaving etc. and story lines, for at least the first 3 episodes just sorting out the main plot. but the latest e4 episode was absolutely amazing, giving series 4 a unique feel, but very funny too. And the next one looks very interesting.

Hmmm anyone mind if I add my twopenneth? A sh!te episode of Shameless is still the best thing on telly. Series 4 is much better than series 3. The Maguires are the best characters to ever appear in Shameless. People on council estates come and go all the time, so if it stayed the same it wouldn't be realistic. None of the characters are bigger than the show, even frank. Although if he left it would muck up the opening credits a bit. thankyou.

arcticmike, good post, i agree with a lot of what you said.
of course, one misses the old characters, but it's just the way everything changes... i find the show actually quite scary now in parts, i live on an estate a bit like that in manc, and the maguires are definitely not to be messed with... it brings a more dark element to the show for me, and the humour is very dark as well. still cartoonish, but more of a black comedy...
i agree with a previous poster who said that a bad episode of 'shameless' is still the best thing on tv...

Every series has started with 'key' characters gone and we viewers wondering how big the holes will be. Every series has been an improvement on the last. New characters had depth that was brought out in interesting storylines. I assumed the same thing would happen with the McGuires, but several episodes in they look like cardboard cut-outs to me, and it's not just because they're dislikeable people (Carol is very hard to like but we know she has depth and complexity). Anyway, the next series is booked and it wouldn't surprise me if there's another series after that, so Shameless fans can keep getting their fill. And it's still one of the best comedy dramas on tv. And with the focus on the right people it might improve - the recent episode featuring Ian's hetero adventure was funny and heartwarming, exactly what I expect Shameless to be. But somebody's got to sit down and figure out what the McGuires are about.

any1 reckon they do PR on the web too? lol. Not that i'm complaining, i love this series, Especialy jamie McGuire, Karen and nice to see how dedicated debbie is to her dad. Although Monica's 'couch grinding' is grating on me. Can't wait for the next installemnts of DVD's

Don't mind who wins . . . . . . as long as it's not Bex, Lisa, Mikey, Belinda, Rex, Sara or Luke. Can't stand the new BBLB presenters club! - member 35

Posted 04-02-07 21:35 Yes. Steve and Fiona are long gone. Yes, Veronica and Kev are banged up abroad. Yes, Sheila's gone off with a guy called Jesus and Sue and Marty have gone off into the sunset to make catalogue ordering, tourrettes suffering babies! BUT.... think about what we still have and what we have been left behind with! This is shameless moving forward, i certainly would rather see it move on than stop completely! We've got Ian and his little gay shenanigans, Debbie's growing up, thats bound to be interesting as she spent most of series 3 looking after everyone but herself. Lip and Mandy, and now Jamie and Karen are together! And the maguires, how can u even say they arent the icing on the cake ppl have got to stop mourning the old characters we are on series 4 now. things are bound to change and move on. And we've still got frank, i reckon once franks gone its game over
Well said Lucy!
