Superb trip thanks, JKL.

Forget the on field farce, had a cracking time (even at the cricket) and (certainly the limited corners of it I saw) Australia's a fantastic place.

I've enjoyed other holidays but have never seen myself living there. Australia, however, is everything this country could and should be . . . though with the obvious advantage of a better climate.

Probably the closest culture to ours outside of these shores, but the contrast in how the place is set up makes you realise what a true hole we've turned our own island into.

Slightly rose tinted glasses as I was there on holiday perhaps, but only had two nights in hotels so was in 'real' areas with those friends and relatives that we were staying with for much of the time . . .

Aye, though you do come from Nottingham Bob Wink

Remember most of our cities were built from the industrial revolution. I've never actually lived in a city in my life and i wouldn't swap our countryside for nout....

When I was driving up to Trent Bridge, Birmingham really scared me.
All those signs for the NEC.

Not especially.

In fact, it was bitterly cold at the MCG. It was actually warmer when we landed at Heathrow yesterday morning than it had been on Christmas Day and Boxing Day in Melbourne! Eek

Can say with my hand on my heart that Boxing Day was the coldest I have EVER been watching cricket in my life, and I've shivered at some pretty chilly days' cricket back here in Blighty.

For most of Christmas Day and Boxing Day it was about 12C in Melbourne. We were out in the 'burbs on Christmas Day itself, and only a few miles further up the road they had about a foot of snow . . . I think it's the closest I've been to a white Christmas since I was about 7! Big Grin

Warmed up to 27C by the time we left for Sydney which was still on the cool side for the time of year (21C-23C), though that also recovered to about 26C for our last few days.

Quite glad it was cool actually, as the sun itself when it got to work was scorchio. Was sat with the Barmy Army on Days 2 and 4 at the SCG completely in the open (a couple of rows directly behind the trumpeter and 'Jimmy Saville'), and being in that direct sun (despite the relatively cool air temperatures) for the whole of Day 2 was a bit intense.

I noticed a lot were wearing jumpers.
Must've been a good atmosphere with the Barmy Army.

Not as good as TB in Aug 2005, I bet Wink

Dreaded place. Spent many a time up there however, as there's some good clubs and good Muay Thai events...

Razz

First a bit of a bite: -

Nottingham's reputation in relation to the rest of the country is largely unjustified and skewed statistically by the tight drawing of the city boundaries around the inner cities and not including the more affluent and peaceful surrounding suburbs.

West Bridgford where I live (and where Trent Bridge is situated) is a better, possibly the best, area in the City and only a mile and a half from the City Centre, but because it was originally a town in its own right is not classed as being in the City.

However: -

I've lived in other areas of the country too, regularly see other town and cities with the travelling involved in my job, my following of sport and have family I visit as far apart as Scotland, Wales, Cornwall and Suffolk.

All have their good and bad areas, but Australia is cleaner, the people are friendlier and more open, I didn't feel threatened or intimidated by any area I was in during the entire 3 weeks, their cities are better planned and less overcrowded (though I take your point re: the Industrial Revolution, JKL), their public transport is excellent and well integrated, and whilst there are plenty of new migrants there, that is also clearly better controlled and more productive for all.

Can't see the circumstances coming together to allow it, but it's the first place I've been to, where I would actually consider moving there permanently.

I don't think there was many that took enough jumpers though!

Great laugh with the Barmy Army, yes.

Very different experience overall to TB 2005, so hard to compare them. That match is likely to forever tower above any other cricket game I ever witness, but I also now have memories of the two games at Melbourne and Sydney that games in this country can never provide.

Smile

Sadly Dem, yes.

Off to Chesterfield tomorrow, Lincoln on Friday, then Leicester and Bedford for an overnighter next week. Glamorous stuff.

Sigh . . . Frown
