They lost both tests in SL under Arthur and Prince. In fairness to Prince he's the one South African player with a heart. The rest don't seem to want to tough it out. Can't see how Smith survives. Hated by everyone in world cricket, by his teammates, by everyone in SA and everyone on the cricket forums. And he couldn't tough out a big innings if he tried. Time for Kallis to assume the reins.

Australia #1 in tests and one dayers and that's the natural order.

Looks like someone in the management is hell bent on finishing Pathan's career. Sacrificing him as a regular one drop batsman was not enough now. Now he ahs to take more pressure of not just opening India's bowling, but batting as well. What next. Pathan wicketkeeping as well?

Congrats India, outplayed SA every step of the way Smile

As Barry Richards was pointing out, this will be an interesting time for some of the Saffie bats, such as Sniff, De Villiers, Gibbs and "The Terrorist" Smile

You would think that maybe two of Smith, AB, Amla and Gibbs would have to be dispensed with.

well he was 'not out' in 2 innings on the seaming pitch of Potchefstroom. So that shows he is in touch with the bat and he can grit it out. Gambhir on the other hand hasn't had even one match in South Africa (not his fault really, but still)so he is still too much of a risk as an opener.

And Pathan won't open the bowling when

Munaf
Zaheer
Sreesanth

are around.

He will be the 4th seamer, who will relieve a few tired legs or replace anyone injured or resting like today.

As Barry Richards was pointing out

Barry Richards must have been eating humble pie as right fom the start of this tour, he has been blabbering a lot in his columns about India' being a pi$$weak team away from home, that India's batsmen can only succeed on flat decks, while SA is untouchable at home.

And have you all noticed how so many columnists in media have changed their tunes after bagging India so badly after the ODIs?

I thought it was VRV's batting and partnership with Dada that really brought us back in the match in the first innings. If anything he showed all the senior batsmen how easily Saffies could be dealt with and was nothing short of sensational.

One cannot be too sure of these things. Pathan is terribly out of form and Munaf injured and you can't keep on playing an out of form player again and again. The bench then has to be considered.

I would definately like to see Sehwag dropped next test and replaced with gambhir even if he isn't better than Sehwag for this type of pitches. A message has to be sent out and repeated failures shouldn't be given too much leeway. This was one of the reasons why India suddenly ahd to drop Zaheer, Ganguly, Laxman and Yuvraj in the past.

yes

Bhajji would have fared as much as VRV on this track.

VRV is effective only when he packs the ball in with pace. Pace is his strength and he will be ineffective if sticks to a mere line and length bowling since he can't swing the ball as much as Sree, Pathan or Zaheer.

youre talking a lot of sense today vikas, i like it Cool

re: VRV. he had an average match but his slogging/batting (whatever you want to call it) in the 1st innings gave india a psychological boost, going in to bowl with a par score and putting SA under some semblance of a pressure. so credit where due...as for his prospects a s fast bowler imo he has shown enough to persist with. he has a pretty easy/natural action and with the height he will get good boue. he seemed to be bowling within himself yesterday. i didnt see him bowl today but no balls seem to be a problem. certainly a better prospect than RP singh, nehra, agarkar etc. ian bishop and mike holding seem to think he is a prospect too

again i agree. if pathan is made to open in the next test, dravid and chappell should be sacked. it would be ludicrous to the extreme. if anything, dravid should go up to open and pathan come in at 7. he may in time be a number 6 but his bowling desperately needs working on. hopefully a chat with wasim would have helped
