I cant believe there is talk of Pathan missing out. Never mind his bowling form- He is one of India's few in form batsmen at the moment. His batting alone should almost pretty much guarantee him a place.
Imo there is not much point in bothering with Jaffer at the top of the order. Judging by hs form on this tour, he will be a walking wicket. Here's an idea- How about opening the batting with Pathan? He's got the technique, he's got the form, and he's got some sort of experience facing a new ball after batting numerous times at number 3 in the ODI games. He's also a left hander. Jaffer's inclusion would mean the first 5 batsmen would all be right handers. In his time as Coach, Chappell has shown great confidence in Pathan's batting. If his bowling has gone backwards under Chappell, then his batting has come on in leaps and bounds. Imo opinion Jaffer wont do any better at the top of the order than Pathan, so why not open the batting with Pathan and have the bonus of his bowling as well?
My Indian team-
Sehwag Pathan Dravid(c) Tendulkar Laxman Ganguly Dhoni+ Kumble Zaheer Sreesanth VRV Singh

Agree with Trevor's XI, though I'd've Bhajji in place of VRV.
Almost everybody has forgotton that Bhajji took 5/13 in the last test innings he bowled in.

Current Indian batting line-up will miserably fail against the SA bowlers. India should go ahead with a bowling team.

That should read in his last test.

Go SA, pity I wont be at the game
Cricket is always the winner!!!

India has already named its final XI for this test (yesterday itself), VRV is preferred over Bhajji.
Don't remember the last time we did this in any form of the game.
Here is the final XI as per batting order (IMO)
Jaffer Sehwag Dravid SRT VVS Ganguly Dravid Zaheer Kumble Sree VRV

Combined no. of wickets this Indian XI has taken is 754, out of which Kumble and Zaheer alone have taken 654 wickets between them.

Delayed start due to damp pitch.
|
| |
|

|
From cricinfo,
Early news coming in is that the pitch was not covered adequately and there are some damp spots on it.
|
| |
|

|
hmm. i wonder if not covering the pitch was accidental
|
| |
|

|
Apparently the damp spots have not been caused by rain. The groundsman had put some damp hessian on the pitch, under the covers, to keep it from cracking up.
As a result of excessive sweating the damp spots developed. When asked about the start the groundsman said, "I believe the umpires won't start play until there is an even contest between bat and ball."

The saffies were obviously trying to cook the wicket. They were caught red-handed in the act. On winning the toss, the plan would be to put India in to bat and this cooked pitch. A day later everything would have dried out when they came in to bat.

Now Daryll Harper who happens to be an umpire and a neutral participant is doing the cover-up job for the sloppy saffies. Absolute crock.

I believe this warrants an official complaint with the ICC. Not that anything is going to come out of it. But this has got to be recorded. They shouldn't be made to get away with this. Given how much of a noise & din they make when they face similar situations on subi pitches.

What if they don't win the toss? Oh, Indian seamers are too rubbish to get any kind of assistance from this pitch. Anyone remember, PE '01, Jamaica '02?

I don't think SA needs anything this silly to win. In their current state of mind, India would fall like a pack of cards even on a flat deck.

quote: Update 8.41GMTAnd finally we have official news from the New Wanderers. There will be an inspection at 11.15 local time, the toss will take place at 11.30, and play will start at 12.00 local time. That is 10.00 GMT, and a delay of ninety minutes from the scheduled start.
what a waste of time
