Sky Sports mentioned that India have fallen below Pakistan in tests to sit 4th and England have dropped to a lowly 8th in odis, below even the West Indies. These the teams which were supposed to be battling it out to overhaul Australia as world number one. Not yet.
ODI ranking is the most erratic I've ever seen! Within a span of 5 months India could reach the 3rd position from #7 and now they've slipped to #4 while Pak have been promoted without playing an ODI during this period!

The system was flawed from the outset. It doesn't take many factors into account which really are relevant. a) Draws due to weather b) first innings lead c) margins by which a draw was scraped (1/2 wickets) or was it a genuine draw. and there are a few more. BTW, IMO such factors should also play a role to substantiate points gained or lost in a win/loss.
A formula that would please all has yet to be found. However, in no case should a series win be punished with loss of points.
West Indies are ranked so low that a higher ranked team like India are required to blank them 4-0 to retain their ranking. As India failed to do that, they slipped in their ranking. It is quite logical really. If India is number 3, then they better play like number 3 or else risk fallin down in ranking. Beating West Indies just 1-0 did not befit a team ranked number 3.
true, i think big teams like australia and england would see 1-0 vs the windies as something of a failure.
as for what mirchy said it sounds like you want a team to get moral victories.
if a team is going to lose points for fighting hard to save a test by 1 or 2 wickets then why would they even bother?
They might as well just lose as the rankings would see it the same, a draw is a draw is a draw the fans can discuss the maybe's till the cows come home but you can give out rankings on what might have happened if....
