There was one small incident that went unnoticed on the whole, but spoke volumes about Dravid and his non-sooking, gentlemanly ways. In the first innings in Jamaica when Dravid was trying to rescue the Indian innings with Kumble, Chanderpaul came on to bowl his leg-spin with a whole set of plasters and strappings on his hand. I am not sure that any of the plasters were on the spinning fingers, but Kumble was about to protest to the umpire about it (as he was entitled to do). Dravid gestured to Kumble to forget it. Can you imagine Punter acting in that way??? or G. Smith??? (Lara may have made a bit of a fuss as he did about some other incidents in the series, but I think Lara was suffering from the ongoing ridiculous political nonsense in the WICB) That, combined with his declaration at the point of the contested catch on the boundary of Dhoni in an attempt to curtail the potential flashpoint illustrates much about the man and I am sure that this contributed to the good spirit the series was played in. This attitude along with his humility can only be admired. Maybe he is not the most creative captain, butthen nor is Punter and Smith. At least Dravid clearly has the intelligence to learn and develop. He really is a great asset to the game in addition to being one hell of a bat
I'm not Welsh........Isn't it?

Very hard not to be appreciative of Dravid's batting and fairness whether one is an Indian supporter or not.

Let's only crucify them for the things they actually do....and not for what we imagine they might do

Great batsman! Probably the best test batsman in the game today! I personally will rate him just behind Ponting and ahead of Inzamam.
Now let's play cricket......

May be fcxx sorted the results in the ascending order of batsmanship rather than the other way !

Even then both Ponting and Dravid batsmen who bat at #3, isn't it?

Maybe i should have used the word "arguably" instead of "probably".

True, fcxx.

I wish someone would take a look at Mr Pontings away average and in compare Dravids against it - it what makes Dravid a far better batsman. It seems Dravid v Ponting threads will now replace the old Lara v Tendulkar ones

If ever there was "play for your average" player, Dravid is your man.

I think thats a flawed way of looking at it. You have to compare Dravid with Lara, Border, Waugh, SRT and SMG when they crossed 9000 runs, not with when they ended their careers or where they are now. Every player other than RSD in that list has made over 10K runs now. I think Dravid would still be the best in terms of average though.

I'd still pick Sunny ahead of Dravid and Ponting just in front of Dravid too. Ponting won't die wondering when it comes to batting, and he will bat in a positive manner no matter what sitiation. Dravid and Kumble are lions though, team men through and through.

So fcxx,
If you have a pitch like Sabina park, will you choose Rahul or Ponting?

Lara's case is particularly astonishing one, but his average at home might've been swelled by all those big scores at ARG.
