South Africa captain Graeme Smith is out of the tour of Sri Lanka after tearing ligaments in his ankle. Smith, 25, slipped while running on Saturday and is yet to discover how long he will be sidelined for. With Jaques Kallis also missing the series, Ashwell Prince will lead the Proteas in the two Test matches, the first of which starts on 27 July.
I was quite surprised by Prince being appointed. I wasn't even sure if he was a permanent fixture in the side tbh. Boucher or Pollock would have done a good job.
Lets hope everyone's favourite cricketer gets well soon anyway
I guess Prince's experience of Asia doesn't go far beyond having an Indian wife - but there aren't too many other candidates who come to mind.
One thing, he doesn't seem to be afraid to speak his mind on contentious issues, as he did a few years ago:
quote:
"It doesn't matter what colour you are; talent can only take you so far. You are never going to achieve anything in cricket without hard work. The quota or 'target' system is wrong for one simple reason - it messes with the minds of both white and black players. 'Am I here because I am black?' 'Am I left out because I am white?' "
