Some of us reckon that Warne has 698 test wickets. His great moment will probably come some time later today.

Warne took 6 wickets in last years ICC game.

Although officially a test match it is not universally regarded as such. In the 1970s the England v ROW series had its test status removed after a few years. The same may happen in this case.

Warne had better get 2 more wickets.

Well it would be stupid of the ICC to do that, after sanctioning the game. Just the same Warnes got the 2nd innings here and a turning track in Sydney to do it...Can't see it as a problem.

The same was said about Lara when he overtook Border as the leading test run scorer. However I think he has since put to bed any doubt by beating Border's total, even when you exclude his ICC contribution.

As for Warne he should easily claim 2 wickets in this innings (plus 1 more test).

I would say it was stupid of them to sanction the game in the first place. I very much hope they do de-test it.

As i said, the 1970 series was originally an official test series but the ICC removed the status later. The reasons for that series not counting as tests apply equally to last year.

I'm sure he will get the other two and i will applaud when he does.

In fact, i hope Warne gets another 19 wickets in the next 3 innings (not too quickly though). That way he will still have 700 when BD/ZIM matches are discounted.

Rather than strip last year's game of its Test status I think they should re-instate the standing of the 1970 series.

If you say it's a Test it's a Test and should remain as such.

Just as we can't de-list games from the past involving Bangladesh, we shouldn't de-list games from composite XI's given Test status in the first place.

Cheers.

I think test matches should be contests between the test playing 'countries'.

It is therefore correct not to count the 1970 series (great though it was).

Why should we delist games involving the Bangers and Zimbawians?

They can't be as bad as some of the South African or NZ teams from 70 years ago.

If you discount these wickets you might as well discount wickets against tail-enders who can't hold a bat.

I don't think these can be de-listed, but i wish they would stop playing them.

Its just that performances against them can distort a player's averages. Its safest to disregard these matches therefore.

The only team previously which was generally of such a low standard was the pre-war New Zealand team. Zimbabwe looked briefly like they were about to take the next step, as NZ did in the 1950s.

It would be nice if the WSC games were given some sort of status.

Anyway, Warne now has his 700 ex World XI.

TGM(The GGreat Murali) did this feat sometime back. DW is playing catch up cricket.

So Warne and McGrath end up with 991 wickets together.

As per the original reason for this thread, it depends on your definition of a test match.

Mind you, as McGrath took the last wicket this would actually make it 992.

Finished with figures of 2/92 in his final test, a very disappointing finish.

It must be quite demoralising for Warne just missing out on 1000 international dismissals too. He finished with 993 by my calculations.
