I was the one who brought Kjnr into this (and my mod I wish I hadn't now!).

And that was by taking a pretty cheap shot, too.

mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa

Or something like that...

But these were all very important series wins or saves for Australia that would not have gone the other way were it not for Mark Waugh.

Important series are not there to be won or saved every day of a long career.

If you're looking for failures when an important series was in the balance you could point to

1998 in Calcutta. Waugh did nothing in the must win second test, only to score 150 in the dead rubber. If he'd scored that 150 in the Calcutta test it could have made a big difference.

He did nothing again in Calcutta three years later allowing India to take it to a decider.

But in Chennai Waugh was the only Australian other than Hayden to score than 100 in the match - passing 50 in both innings.

That's a pretty strong effort, but turning that second innings top score of 57 into a century would have won the series. So I suppose that's another "failure" in this context.

The series was in the balance in the West Indies in 1999.

Waugh failed in the third test allowing Brian Lara to stage his assault and steal a one wicket win.

Yet in the fourth test that Australia needed to win to square the series it was Mark Waugh's partnership with Justin Langer that put the match out of the W'Indies reach.

Mark Waugh very rarely went AWOL when the series was in the balance.

It's the reason he was able to keep his place in the team while turning in mediocre performances at other times.

Cheers.

Looks like the Tassies will most certainly win this, I can't see them losing it. I'm a dubber, but looking at future Australia propspects, this Luke Butterworth fella looks good, he's taken wickets (4/33) and had to good knocks (66 1st innings and 106 2nd innings). Possible future allrounder? He is only 23 too.

Butters bowls medium pies. Might be a batsman who bowls.

He's started his FC career pretty well though... 23 wickets at 18.7!!! OK, small sample size and all that... might be at least a handy JAMODI allrounder at some point.

*sigh*

What a shocking way to lose - dubbers pulling off a record chase to clinch the final. 570 would be almost twice the previous record, in fact.

This is soooooooo depressing . . . Frown Frown Frown Frown Frown Frown

Popcorn has been most impressive in recent times. Particularly this game. Should get player of the match unless some dubber cheats his way to a matchwinning total.

FTLOG, now my thread about "why was my NRR thread deleted" has been deleted. No email yet.

I guess they needed to delete that purely cricket related thread to make room for more threads speculating about a homicide investigation.
