Lets face it, he hasn't played against any decent teams yet.

You can't judge him on JAMAS.

He certainly seems to be a late bloomer. I saw him a few years ago and thought he was dog ordinary (although could always maintain a good line).

What he seems to have developed is a leg cutter and an off cutter with a fairly similar action.

His secret weapon is that he just looks so ordinary.

You'll all disagree with me, but I still think Gillespie is a better bowler than him. Even right now.

He does look very ordinary, but he makes the ball 'talk'

Plenty of folks have average to poorish first class stats but turn out to be fine test players with a better record. It's probably a little more strange though for someone at his age to come through that way.

But I've seen every test he's played so far and those stats aren't flattering him, he's been brilliant.

He's a line/length bowler. Decent, but he's starting so late, he'll only enjoy half a career.

His action reminds me ofJohn Snow, which is no bad thing at all. The rocking deliver stride, and the slightly less-than-vertical arm.

He isn't bad - but the fact is that 11 rabbits caught in the headlights kinda makes him look better than he actually is!
Adelaide day 1 he looked ordinary.

Comparable to Gus Fraser I guess.

Yes a good comparison - Clarke is very similar to Gus.

Come to think of it, my comment really applies to all the Aussie bowlers - 'cept Warne - it's England's inept and pathetic batting coupled to the "fear" and brain-freeze factor that have really made the Aussie quicks look good.

Those who have the Adelaide Test on dvd or video - check out their bowling when they were on the receiving end ... it became absolutely ragged.

Fact is, Tailender was right..... Flintoff should never have declared when he did...
should have just batted on to 700 plus on day 3 and then stuck them in.

Oh well - all history now!

The national selectors say he's "in the Glenn McGrath mould". This series and against South Africa he has done that sort of job.... Could have played for your mob as both his parents are poms.

Dusty, your argument is starting to veer dangerously close to 'he only takes the wickets of batsmen who are crap enough or stupid enough to get out to him'.

Which was equally true of Martin McCague. Or, for that matter, Warne or McGrath.

Mate i really think your opinion of england pre ashes was just far too high and it's stopping you from accepting just how good this australian team is.

The career stats will tell you that when on song this aussie team is the vastly superior unit to england.

I agree. Australia have 4 all-time greats in their side - McGrath, Warne, Ponting and Gilchrist. England, by contrast have none. This isn't a dig at England, just showing the strength of the current Aussie side, who are lucky to have so many great players plying their trade at the same time.

Even when England were at full strength in 2005 and many of Australia's big guns were off colour (admittedly credit to England here), the series could have gone either way. England deserved to win but it was a close run thing. Forward to 2006 - Australia have strengthened their side (Clark, Hussey) and they are no longer suffering from complacency. England have simply been blown away and the current scoreline (4-0) tells the whole story (I feel most/all current test teams would be unable to compete in Australia).

Having said that, if England had come fully prepared and picked their strongest side from the beginning, they would have put up a better fight.

Anyways back to the original question. It's still early days but Clark certainly looks the part. Will be interesting to see how he performs in the sub-continent.

Although by the end of his career I feel he will be averaging in the twenties, as opposed to his current average (18)

I like the 'look' of Clark as a bowler. I think he will be a spearhead for Aussies for 2-3 years.

But he will be more in the Jason Gillespie'ish' mould in terms of effectiveness as time passes. He doesn't look a consistent/threatening as McGrath ( for all they say he is a clone and despite his JAMAS average) and he hasn't the early start that McGrath had in his career.

In his case, half a career could be up till about 2009 Ashes, by which time he'll be 36.
