Breathtaking Langer hits double ton
From correspondents in London
July 20, 2006

A BRILLIANT double century from Australia opening batsman Justin Langer has given Somerset the upper hand on day one of its English county championship game with Surrey at Guildford.

Langer, playing his final championship match before returning home to Western Australia next week, was in breathtaking form, scoring an unbeaten 234 from 279 balls with 31 fours and two sixes as Somerset made 2-442 in the Division Two game.

It was also the highest individual score at Guildford, beating the previous best of 228 by Darren Bicknell in 1995.

Even with the inclusion of India spin bowler Anil Kumble, Surrey's new overseas signing, the host had no answer to the classy Langer and Neil Edwards, as the pair shared an opening stand of 227.

After Edwards was dismissed, Langer shared another century partnership with Arul Suppiah.

The pitch must be a minefield as well cos Ali Brown has got two wickets, that's as many as he's taken in his last 224 First Class games. He should improve on his strike rate of 501 with this spell as well...

Been doing some stats research and as far as i can see (feel free to correct me if i'm wrong), Langer's 342 is the highest indiviudal total ever made for somerset in first class cricket, beating the previous best of 322 by one Viv Richards. Somerset have also just beaten their highest innings total which was previously 675-9dec vs Hampshire in 1924. Impressive....
