Yeeeesssssssss!!!! The man is back in the fold. I really hope Gilo manages to pass on his talent to the fledgling young England boys under his wing in India. It is surely only a matter of time before we produce a few more match winning spin bowlers. C'mon Gilo! PS Don't forget to teach them how to eek out 20-30 runs per innings as well!
I am sorry but I think that giles is and never was anysort of a bowler, monty absolutely craps on him and bowls circles around him. Sure he could have got you the ectra twenty or so runs but we all know hoiw that turned out in the last ashes series adn the aussies never let him forget it. Hey bobby, nothign against your opinion or anythign but if you want some more spinners for england then giles should not be the one to mentor them, I mean Fletcher lost his job for the stupidly insane choice of picking his winning ashes team. I just do not think Giles was any sort of a bowler and am glad to see him FINALLY leave the game. Just to make it clear though bobby, who do think is better out the giles and Monty?

I am afraid, that in the context of a team game, Giles is the better option. I accept that Monty is a better bowler but stress that cricket is a team game. The sum of the whole is greater than the sum of the individual. We, as mere punters, will never know the level of knowledge that Gilo passed on to the England team during test series. It was his 'all-round good eggness' - as he is described in a soon to be released book - that ensured his place in the England team.
"Wickets win Test Matches" Many commentators and players worl wide haev said it, batsmen make runs, (not bowlers, of course if they can chip in then by all means they should, but it is not there job). Batsmen make runs, bowlers take wickets and wickets win test matches.

I agree with the first part of your thread, the second part I would say,Monty is no better than Giles,he brings no fear into batsmans hearts, certainly not Aussie batsmen.
The greater the challenge, the more GLORIOUS the triumph.
Australians all let us rejoice, for we are 1-2-3.
Must have a drink,I'm drier than a pommies bath towel.
Monty is Englands best spinner since Derek Underwood, and as for Giles, well a certain T.Jennar was a rubbish bowler, but he was invaluble to Warnies career.
Has anyone else noticed how England have steadily got worse since the team ethos, as personified by Gilo, has slipped? It is fine and dandy to be a 'superstar', but another altogether to be part of a well drilled team. Gilo would not have been involved in that ridiculous run out (Panesar) for certain!
By all accounts Gilo is a decent bloke but he was one of the worst spinners England has ever had, considering his record: 54 tests for 143 wickets at 40.60 with only five 5 wicket hauls. Monty has already taken more five fors in 32 fewer tests: 22 tests for 81 wickets at 31.82 with 6 five fors. As far as fielding goes they're both much of a muchness but I wouldn't say Panesar is much worse. Giles's batting was better but 1421 runs at 20.89 was hardly earth-shattering. With that sort of bowling record he'd need to be averaging 30+ to have justified picking him ahead of Monty.
Bobby S's obsession with Gilo is amusing but saying that he would have been a better option that Panesar (even when he's struggling at the moment) is ludicrous.
The Ashes came home, now they're off to Convict Country once again
How Panesar can be compared to Giles, when it comes to fielding, is bizarre in the extreme. Giles dropped Ponting, yes, a valid point, but what about his YEARS of expert fielding at gully? By all means criticise his bowling average but leave his fielding alone! But don't worry, Gilo will have his revenge - I hear that he was interviewed for the England (part-time) selector role.
With the way the england test team is run at the moment, with vaughn and moores getting the final say pretty muich, i dont think giles will be doping any sort of revenge in the near future but even if he did have a chance then i dont think that he would.
