So, who do you think are amongst front runners for player of series in SA-Ind test series?

1) Pollock: 12 wickets @ 15.33 and 150 runs @ 37.5

2) Ntini: 14 wickets @ 23.57

3) Prince: 268 runs @ 53.6

4) Kumble: 13 wickets @ 20.92

5) Sree: 18 wickets @ 19.16

I'd say Pollock and Sree must be the front runners, with Pollock's case being better because of the crucial runs he made for SA in crucial moments.

Thats why good allrounders are so very handy to have in cricket.

it really will depend on the next two days.

if india win and kumble takes 4 or 5 he would get it.

if india win, then probably sreesanth. if sa win, id say pollock. if its a draw (unlikely), prince for being the standout batsman in a bowler dominated series

Well deserved indeed.

Shame he is retiring soon (as speculated) the man could have been one of the all-time true Great all rounders.

Has the best batting technique in RSA (barring maybe Kallis) and could have averaged closer to 40 than his low 30s.

I think pace is what has undermined him in the bowling department and has made him a merely very good bowler not a great like McGrath. There was a time when he averaged 18 after 200 test wickets. That is Waqar like and if he retired then, it'd be interesting how we would have viewed him.

Go the Ginger Ninja.

I guess Pollock will always be regarded a notch below the great allrounders, as he isn't truly great in either discipline - compare to the likes of Imran and Hadlee who were undeniably great bowlers, and Sobers a great batsman.

As you said, it's a shame Pollock couldn't maintain his early form (pace related) as our perception of him as a very good bowler would most probably change. It could be argued that in the 90s, Pollock > McGrath. His record vs Australia (and indeed all test sides) was exceptional during that period...

Thing was in the 90s he was pretty brisk. I think he was well known for hitting people on the helment more than anyone in domestic or county cricket.

That series in '98 with Donald and Pollock at their peak against England must have been a sight, also shows how underrated Atherton is.

Yup he was. That's what I meant when I said he was unable to maintain his early form. His relative decline can be related to his drop in pace. Though I wasn't very clear Wink

which goes to show - longevity counts when rating players. not everyone on this forum appreciates that eg graeme pollock in an all-time test XI.

although he never averaged 18. between 2000 and 2003 inc his overall test bowling avg was 20. still an alltime great imo (almost 4000 runs @ 32, over 400 wkts @ 23)

Well done to Pollock, truly deserving winner of MoS.

Barry Richards in one of his column was shuddering at the prospect of Pollock less SA. Indeed, it must be a scary thought for SA think tank. The impression he had on this entire India tour, both in ODIs as well as in tests was second to none from SA and I believe he was one SA player who played the most decisive part in ensuring SA's wins in both the series.

I still think he'd like to sign off with style with a series win over Aussies as his last hurrah.
