3. William Gilbert Grace
4. Herbert Sutcliffe
5. Ranjitsinhji
6. Walter Hammond
7. Duleepsinhji
8. Denis Compton
9. Ken Barrington
10. Patsy Hendren
11. Peter May
12. Ted Dexter
13. Eddie Paynter
14. Maurice Leyland
15. David Gower
16. Colin Cowdrey

Not altogether happy with numbers 17-20, but I'm sure some English fans can fill in the blanks.

FWIW, I'd have Boycott instead of Edrich.

I know, I just can't bring himself to type anything that reflects positively on Boycott.

Gallian batted pretty well in 2 of his 3 tests.

Could have been a decent number 5.

I don't need to get started. Everyone knows Ramps is better than the Don.

Pontoon-

Well, go to bed, and come back to the thread when you can. There isn't a time limit. Cool

Dunno.

Have you got any serious comments on the thread topic?

I think Phil Mead deserves a mention as well as Tom Graveney who I would personally place between May and Dexter in this list

Surely Woolley, FS Jackson and maybe Hayward have to make this list.

Gooch would be higher on my list too I think.

We all know Boycott was a grade A tosser and as boring as hell, but he has to sneak into that list somewhere surely?

No probs with Gooch or Edrich. Botham as a batsman (esp in mid-career) was as feared as any other around at the time.

Wasn't there a thread on here awhile back full of poms saying that Thicko was/is better than Gooch?

Aye, and that he'd retire as England's leading Test run scorer.

-----------------------------
"Cameron Leon White (b. August 18, 1983 in Bairnsdale, Victoria) is an Australian cricketer, and can hit a ball further than any man in the world. His six hitting has left the laws of science in tatters, with his biggest ever six, at Somerset's ground, Taunton, measuring a staggering 914 metres from the bat to the landing point." - Wikipedia

Still might do. Who knows when he'll be back. Could be next summer. He could have at least another 4 years left.
