On the Jones AND Read saga?

Looks to me as if Jones has lost the ability to bat, and that Read never actually had it.

Is it time for the selectors to say Goodbye to both, and take a punt on one of the others we have available?

Quite possibly. Who would you suggest?

I would be inclined to give Foster a go. Just because he never really had a chance and seems the best of the rest as an all round package.

He's just not quite got it, from what I saw in the ODI's he played, whereas Foster looked like he could handle the international arena.

As for Sutton Rob, behave.

James Foster did have some opportunity and failed to cut the mustard.......

What about this chap Nixon they selected for the ODIs?

If he does OK, could they give him 12-18 months in the test side & give the "promising youngsters" a bit longer to develop?

If i'm not mistaken he was still in his early 20's, and played against India and Australia away in his early chances. Still he's improved greatly, and has got to be next in line surely.

Roy,

What did Foster do wrong, exactly? First man ever to stump Tendulkar in a Test Match. Gave Andy Flower a bit of lip in Zimbabwe. Has mended the latter relationship and has improved greatly under his tutelage at Essex. Bats much better (although he was always a pretty confident batsman with a decent technique) and has worked very hard to eliminate his major 'keeping flaw - his weakness on the left side.

Rachel, are you expecting a sensible answer from Roy?

Well no, but I can at least point out the obvious flaws in his original response.

That's true but he seems oblivious to his flaws even when pointed out.

Just look at his first class ave's -

2001-2003 23.00 roughly
2004-present 43.00 roughly

And his keeping is widely regarded as good as well.

What I really mean't was that you won't know just how improved Foster really is until he is back playing at Test level.
Excuse me for being sceptical but Geraint Jones fans were claiming he had improved a lot during his time out of the Test team and that was rubbish.
Not to mention Chris Read fans were also selling him as an improved batsman before he made his way back into Englands team!

Well Roys got my support in this regard- Read was always total garbage with the bat.

Foster has to be in prime position though, given the selectors crass refusal to consider Sutton.

Read was always muck. Jones glovework HAD improved over time was what people were saying, unfortunately his batting had deteriorated.

Irrespective of whether he's slightly, much, greatly or vastly improved Roy, he has without a doubt got to be worth a shot after what i've seen this series from the two we have out there.
