You call Vaas, vaas, nothing else. You wouldn't call him Cameron Vaas would you? Just to suit your tongue!

If that was his preferred nickname, then yes I'd call him that.

The nickname 'Monty' was his dad's nickname, given in 'the old country' and was given to Mudhsuden Jr.... His mum and dad call him Monty as well, I think they're astute enough judges - moreso than a poncey wind-up merchant with a supersized chip on his shoulder.

Oh here we go, abuse the messenger instead of dealing with the real issue.

I did deal with the real issue. His father gave the nickname to him. Therefore, it has nothing to do with Anglicisation - as he gave no nickname to his brother Isher or his sister Charanjit.

Ah, well, you answered what I was going to say.

But I am interested to know exactly what would be wrong with an Anglicisation anyway, given that Monty is um, English.

If I was Panesar, I would definitely get offended if people called me Bob, Tom, Rodney or etc. This is not some Bombay call centre where you put English names on Indian employees!

May I interject?

Shortened English names/nicknames, aka Monty, are extremely commony among Indians living in India, especially the Sikhs. Monty is only one example. I have known a 'Sunny' and a 'Sonny' (from Sandeep), 'Rags' (from Ragesh), 'Nags' (from Nagesh) and a 'Bonny' from gawd knows where.

BTW, Sunil Gavaskar was Sunny Gavaskar.

No, this is England where people like Panesar as viewed as English.

Unless you don't regard him as English at all. Why would that be?

You should be proud of your culture and expect the same respect for others.

He is proud. He doesn't have to wear a turban, he doesn't have to be vegetarian but he is by choice - because of his heritage.
