Which makes Lara's stats quite amazing.

Tendulkar 55

All this proves is that Sachin has batted slightly better against Australia than Ponting against India.

Since Australia has the better attack it tends to support Karti's case.

Atm Ponting is the best batsman in the world, if we are judging over their whole careers then SRT slightly edges it.

But i expect Ponting to end up with the most test centuries when he retires.

If Ponting finishes strongly he will have a claim as one of the best bats ever.

Another pointless thread really. Never surprises me how it always draws the faithful with all those differnt cuts of numbers. These kind of threads will always get big responses while the "insecure" are there to be baited.

The fact that Lara so often has to bat with the rest of the team falling around him makes him better than his stats. Ponting and Tundulkar don't have that problem so much.

In the last 5 years or so.. yes definitely. Lara has held the torch.

Till 1999-2000, Laras team was consistently superior what with Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh turning up for them.

Also, when the West Indies first went into decline, Lara went into a midcareer trough - something which Tendulkar has never had.

Huh? And youre "personal opinions" - unsubstantiated, and with dubious origins and intent, are consequential?

Flower could also figure in such a discussion. He averaged 51.5 in the weakest side in world cricket.

It hasn't been a problem for Brian Lara when the West Indian team have put aside winning and losing and given a self indulgent Brian Lara the opportunity to bat forever on good batting strips and break records has it?
I think you can shoot holes in the 'poor Brian theory' as far as his individual statistics suffering all the time because he has played in a poor team.

Good call. He didn't get to face the Zimmer bowlers like Lara/Tendulkar/Ponting, either.

But Ponting may average over 100 against Australia if given the chance. Nobody knows.

So lets stick to the facts.

Statistically, Ponting is superior to Tendulkar.

Sachin has performed slightly better against Australia than Ponting has against India. Australia has a better attack than India.

Surely these ARE facts. They look like facts to me.

What I always find unsatisfactory about these kind of threads is that inevitably whilst "bigging" up one side of the argument a lot of posters "put down" the other side.

Tendulkar? Ponting? Its not like you would turn down either to improve your side. Why does one have to be "better" than the other?
