funny that.!

McGrath was a great bowler - he's going to take your wicket quite a few times if you play against him, even if you're Bradman. But a bunny is when you can't score any runs against someone - Like Atherton who didn't have the shots to take McGrath on tried to grind it out, usually it was just a matter of time.

But for example, Lara in the 1999 series was dismissed 3 times by McGrath, for 213, 100 and 7. So hardly his bunny.

Lara was a genius - even more so than Richards and Lloyd.

If you look at Lara's career the toughest matches were played against Australia, its always worth seeing how a player performs against the best around at the time - but Lara still has a stunning record: 9 Test centuries at an average of 51.

From spanking Warne all round the SCG to the tune of 277, via a match-winning 132 on a Perth flier vs McGrath and Reiffel, 182 at Adelaide against McGrath, Gillespie and MacGill when no-ne else on his side could reach 50. To prove it wasn't a fluke he did it again 5 years later: 226 against McGrath, Lee and Warne this time. Two furious half-centuries to help set up the greatest run-chase of all time at Antigua.

All that and I still haven't mentioned his trilogy of hundreds in 1999 against Australia, when he dragged himself from the brink of despair to almost single-handedly defy the world's best team and claim a draw in the series. That 153* at Bridgetown is the most compelling innings I have ever seen.

So rather than worry about the troughs, how about remembering that the peaks were higher than most batsmen can even dream of.

Obviously you know nothing of the importance of consistency in cricket.

Most often high scores are a waste and on top of a good start by the team.

Lara didn't rescue his side from defeat like Viv and Clive did so often when their side was down.
He merely struck when the going was good for the most part of his career.
Pls don't mention his selfish 400 in England where he ruined his team from a possible great win by batting on as Captain.

Viv Richards described Lara as an unfit Captain after that.

Greedy Lara hogging the strike for that 153* at Bridgetown - he should given Walsh the chance to make a few runs! Or left it to Keith Arthurton and Carl Hooper to win the West Indies the series in Sydney. Those centuries I mentioned were of the highest class against the best.

Richards and Lloyd were surounded by fine batsmen - Greenidge, Haynes, Fredericks, Kanhai, Sobers, Rowe, Kallicharran, Dujon, Gomes, Richardson so I don't think they often had to save the match like Lara did. He scored 351 runs against Murali on his own back-yard in one Test and still lost! They know nothing of batting under the pressure Lara did, often he carried the entire hopes of the Caribbean on his shouldes.

You judge the greats by what they do against the best opponants - and by any criteria you choose that makes Lara a great, worthy of a place in any all-time XI.

As Tony Cozier said of Brian Lara a few years ago:

"...I honestly believe that, had he the mental capacity of a Steve Waugh, he would have every record going and been the greatest batsman to have ever lived..."

The way he decimated attacks throughout the early-mid nineties, you'd have to wonder what might have been.
