I'm confused.

The schedule says the first ODI is on 26 June.
http://www1.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/2007/OD_TOURNEYS/FUTURE/

But the article, dated June 22, talks about tomorrow's ODI v Ireland.
http://content-aus.cricinfo.com/ireland/content/story/299271.html

Anyone know when it actually starts?

yawn...india win by 9 wkts (D/L) as gambhir continues minnow bashing and ganguly does nothing to dispel the 'selfish batting' criticism...

Seen independent of the opposition, I was quite surprised to see India fielding well and more so bowling accurately in Belfast. If this is not a flash in the pan and they show some consistency, maybe there is an argument to be made for adding a batting coach and doing away with this head coach business altogether. There are plenty of good batting coaches to be found at home and such a move would obliterate the need (or discussion) for a foreign coach.

To be fair to Ganguly, this is his 8th 50 in his last 12 odis albeit some were against some sub standard bowling attacks.

Fair point, but he's still succeeded when many around him have failed.....although that probably says more about Indian batting in recent weeks than it does him.

Yesterday I saw that Saffie debutant running through the Irish batting line up. why don't we have a pace bowler like that?

SA has plenty of quality pacers waiting in the line after their first string attack. That morkel was also very good, who bowled in afro-Asia matches. Why don't wehave such bowlers?

Why do our bowlers get hammered invariably after 25th over?

lack of strength and stamina. that induces mistakes in any sport. you might have all the skills, but if you have no stamina you will make mistakes

Hmm..

So how do the bowlers of other country have more strength and stamina? Even the debutants in SA or Australia impress a lot, while our bowlers can impress only with the new ball!

genes? training? i dont know. but putting it on the right spot time after time requires a lot of strength and stamina. how we can improve this in our bowlers is up to the bcci to find out

actually why blame the cricketers alone. we cant seem to compete in any sport that requires strength and stamina as an intergral part of the sport. the only south asians in fact who come to mind who were world champions in a major sport are the khan family of squash players, else who do we have?

in hockey once other countries started playing it in good enough numbers we were finished. look where indian hockey is now

i am sure this can be changed with good training and selection. but that needs to be done at a younger level, probably not for the current bowlers

There is no simple answer to that. But high amongst the reasons would be the lack of discipline and training. Our players get too big too soon and lose the plot.

thats too simple a reason for india and sri lanka being the only nations not to have a great fast bowler in 75 years. unless all south asians have no discipline (which could be an argument actually Big Grin )

It is only one of the reasons. Being fit and able for a long time depends on being disciplined and committed for long periods. Kapil Dev was, Irfan wasn't. And Kapil was a great bowler IMO for a period of 8 or so years. Our decline in fast bowling or bowling in general can be timed with our ODI gold rush.

our fast bowling has in fact improved post 90s when odis started

kapil was a very good bowler, but not a marshall, imran, lillee or hadlee

But at the moment we don't have a bowler of even Srinath's calibre what to talk of Kapil! And we just can't think of having bowlers like Marshal etc.

India are probably doomed never to have a great fast bowler. There's a pattern somewhere when the Legendary Mohd. Nissar migrated to Pakistan, and we were left with the steadier but a less romantic figure of Amar Singh this side of the border to idolise. Same goes for Jahangir Khan, fast bowler also crossed over to the dark side. If he had stayed maybe there's have been a chance Imran, being a close relative, would have too.

I disagree. If cricket was administered well all facets of our game will improve. It is not as if it is just the fast bowling we are lagging behind the leaders. Fitness, fielding etc. have always been low on our priority list and it is no wonder that a physically challenging discipline like fast bowling has also lagged right through. Most of our kids have traditionally taken the soft way out ie. dreamt to be batsmen who can stand there and flay the ball around without too much effort. That has to change and Indian fans need to get over their obsession with batting heroes and start paying importance to the other disciplines. Only then things will improve. Example here is the big level of difference in public adoration bestowed on an Anil Kumble Vs say a Sachin or Saurav or Rahul. This has to change. We have all heard the pundits say that bowlers win matches and catches win matches never heard anybody say batsmen win matches. That is not to be taken literally but to be understood in the context of how important the other disciplines are.

the reason why the public adore sachin vs kumble is because sachin has been the best batsman in the world for a decade and has claims to be a member in an all-time world xi. no indian bowler has come close

in contrast pakistan has had fazal mahmood, imran khan, wasim akram and waqar younis. what was the motivation for them when they grew up?

I reckon that religion/culture has something to do with this. I will leave it at that else this thread could take a very different flavour.
