Incidentally when i was putting the One Day nicknames into the poll, i knew them all except Surrey. No doubt fans of some other Counties would cunningly place an 'r' somewhere in there.

The Steelbacks were a tough army regiment from Northamptonshire from 1750ish til past at least 1815(I'm not sure when overall). They were serving in the Peninsula campaign of the Napoleonic wars under Wellington who was pretty harsh to his troops. They were a disobedient lot, who were always up to 'mischeif' and Wellington ordered any sort of punishment to be a whipping or flogging. Nevertheless, they kept disobeying and kept coming back for more punishment. They were known as the Steelbacks due to their unwillingness to fall in line but mostly because not one of them flinched or cried out in pain, however much punishment they were meted out. All in all one of the weirdest names out of our OD teams, but one with one of the best stories.

I prefer my reasons for the name.

Thanks Mangy
I've prepared for the worst case scenario ...but it could be even worse than that
Some People are like slinkies. Not really good for anything but they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs.

Yorkshire should be Yorkshire Grumbling Whippetty Flat Caps. Your reasons for the name are incredibly inaccurate. It's only really Corby with the Steel industry. They're Scottish. May well be gay though. Suppose we did do alot of metalwork, but chose a better gay tune than 'Everybody Dance Now'.

The three most powerful batting line ups are Somerset, Lancashire and Notts and I fancy one of them to win it.

They got that name because of being flogged under Wellesley's orders for stealing beehives. Alsao known as the "Honeysuckers".

No, that was one incident. There were many others as well. I've got the book with it in. Drunk on duty, getting into fights, chasing after posh birds - quite a few. The hive thing's mentioned much because it's the most strange.

Not sure I agree with you there at all. I'd put Northants way, way up there in terms of powerful batting line-ups: Sales, Klusener, Wessels, Van Der Wath, Crook, Rob White all smack a massive ball and Rogers hits a pretty big ball too. That's 7 top drawer hitters...

But they are known as the Honeysuckers.

Hmmm, not the ones who got into fights instead. Or the ones trying to perk posh birds. It's not like the regiment was 4 people. At the very least it's a few hundred, fink abaat i'.

The 58th Foot (Northhamptonshire) Regiment, yes?
The 57th from Middlesex were also known as the steelbacks, much earlier in the mid 1700s, but became the diehards after they lost 428 out of 616 at Albuera in 1811.

Not sure to be honest... didn't take note of the exact regiment.
