Surely he must now be considered the greatest swimmer of all time. Just saw highlights of the 200 butterfly final and he broke his own WR by 1.7s. Furthermore he is on track for an unprecedented 8 gold medals. Spitz was great (as was Thorpe) but this guy is on another level.

On a related note, how popular is swimming in Australia, and do the World Championships in Melbourne get much coverage?

Phelps is extraordinary.

It's popular - on free to air, cable & radio.

Phelps just needs longevity to cement his spot as the best ever I reckon.

Another 4 or 5 golds in Beijing should do it.

If he's that good, maybe he should start racing fishes rather than people.

The TV ratings for this world championship are abysmal and I mean cRap as cRap can be.

With Thorpe gone, it will become less popular.

At its height during the 2000 Olympics, swimming was on par with any sport in terms of popularity.

On BBC yesterday, they showed swimming highlights (11pm) before the cricket (midnight).

In terms of Aussie swimming losing Thorpe is a big blow. It doesn't help that Hackett is having a poor return from injury

The swimming is on tv a lot but i must admit i have no idea who plelps is.

Only ones i really know are thrope and hackett and it's only because they are on tv ads every 5 seconds.

swimming has to be the worst spectator sport around.

Swimming is the most popular sport in Australia. The World Championships don't really get that much interest though, nowhere near the olympics

Broke another world record today (his own) in the 200m medley - 4th gold for him, and 3rd WR broken in the week.
