Alwin is way off the mark. Many of you forget that Pakistan have a very shakey batting line-up. Recall they struggled badly against England at home on docile pitches. The only reason they competed was because of their bowling that consisted of Rana and Akhtar.

I don't think Alfred is that off the mark, Sher. In the second half of summer in England, pitches are not damp to make the ball gain lateral movement, nor is the condition going to aid exaggerated conventional swing.

So Pak batsmen should feel comfortable!

Chandan, I don't think many of England's recent pitches(03-06+) have been typical, we seem to not be playing to our strengths in that respect. We could produce fast, bouncy pitches if the groundsmen wanted to...

ShEr, as you rightly said, those were docile pitches. Both sides seem to have depleted resources now, but IMO, England have a stronger batting line-up. At least at home. And no matter how much Kaneria talks up his bowling skills, I don't think he's either a Warne or a Murali.

Hoggard tests hand in Lord's net

Cricinfo staff

July 12, 2006

Matthew Hoggard has managed to test his injured hand during a bowling stint in the nets at Lord's, raising hopes that he will be fit to take his place in the first Test against Pakistan on Thursday. Hoggard went through the session on during training on Wednesday and was able to match the other bowlers for pace.

It was his first bowl since suffering the freak injury at Canterbury when his Yorkshire team-mate, Tim Bresnan, stood on his hand while wearing spikes in his boots. Hoggard needed six stitches in his right hand and has spent tim in an oxygen chamber to aid his recovery process.

Hoggard has played in 32 consecutive Tests dating back to the 2004 tour of the Caribbean. In that time he has become an indispensable part of the England attack, and recently became the tenth Englishman to pass 200 Test wickets.

He visited a specialist on Sunday morning and it was decided to employ the same hyperbaric process at a hospital in St John's Wood hospital that Simon Jones used as he tried to recover from his ankle injury before the final Ashes Test last summer.

Earlier in the week David Graveney, England's chairman of selectors, said. "I think it would be reasonable to see him [Hoggard] bowl in the nets on Wednesday to see what he can do and what he can't."

England's spate of injuries has hit the team hard since the end of the Ashes, with Andrew Flintoff, Ashley Giles, Michael Vaughan and James Anderson all out of contention with a variety of ailments. "These things tend to happen in a cluster. It never rains - it pours," Hoggard told reporters at Canterbury. "When you have one injury you seem to get more, and we are just in a very bad trot of luck."

"As soon as I try and move it [right hand] or I hit it, it's still quite sore, but we've still got three or four days," Hoggard told BBC Sport on Tuesday. "If I can hold a cricket ball, that's fine, but it's the catching and the batting that's going to be the difficult part, so we'll just have to see how well the stitches have held together."

"It's very frustrating to be fit in every other aspect and just have a couple of scratches on your hand. I'm dying to play on Thursday, so I'll be doing all I can, but we'll just have to wait and see how it is."

Though Hoggard remains optimistic of playing at Lord's, Gloucestershire's Jon Lewis is on stand-by to step into his role having been named in a 13-man squad.

Allergy's being too pessimistic. Attempted reverse-woofing, probably.

Hey Mirch, indeed, I am not looking forward to watching Pakistan get pasted all over the ground and then get smashed to bits by Hoggard/Harmison !

Chandan, therefore Alonso is still way off the mark. Pakistan batting is just too brittle.

Anyone think reverse woofing is getting tedious?

It's obvious Pakistan will bat first, get plenty against Jon Lewis and Plunkett and Kaneria and England's weak lower-order will do the rest.

I think Pakistan's final x1 will look something like:

Butt
Farhat
YK
Inzi *
MoYo
Afridi
Razzaq
Kamran+
Sami
Gul
Danish

No stand out bowler, but plenty of options and it bats all the way down to 9.

Younis khan should be fit - I think cricinfo made a mistake. Its not reported anywhere else.
Pak will still be without their top three bowlers and England without Freddie - may turn to be aboring match unless the pitch provides some assistance. With Malik out Afridi may get chance to play.

"Pakistan cricket captain Inzamamul Haq Wednesday said that chances for inclusion of Shoaib Malik and Mohd Asif in the first test against England are very slim due to their knee and elbow injuries."

Now let's play cricket......

Why don't you people abandon this effort at imitating the official thread for this match? It's dying, people...

Allan. When i said i disliked it, i meant the fact that i have had to live with it for 30 years, Chandan.
BTW, there's no point in me reverse-woofing in a series Australia are not involved in. Although i like to see England do well unless it is an ashes series, i am not that bothered who wins.
Also, Pakistan have recently beaten England, they are higher in the table and in better form.
They should take the series narrowly, as the bookies are also suggesting.
It's not rocket science.
