Yep...and it's nice to see someone really deserve their England call-up rather than just being gifted it because they're 'promising'.

He certainly has and it will be interesting to see how he goes against India against much superior batting.

One thing not down to luck, however, is his ability to bowl a decent line and length - something missing from other English seamers' armoury at the moment.

How is bowling well in county cricket for years without being picked and then eventually taking the chance given in test cricket lucky?

"Lucky" in the sense that

1) he made his comeback against one of the poorest sides to tour England in living memory.

2) the overhead/pitch conditions were ideally suited to his type of bowling.

But you can't do as well as he did on luck alone.

Let's have this conversation after the series against India.

jeezz...talk about waiting for someone to fail. He's got all the attibutes to be successful if given the chances. The same people writing him off would give countless chances to a 22 year old kid who could bowl 88mph.

Absolutely- slagging off a player who has been our most successful seamer in the last series and who is mechanically very similiar to Hoggard, who has taken wickets against all comers in the last few years.

Crikey - what's the view like from up on that high horse of yours?

All I've done is add a note of caution to the effect that much sterner tests lie ahead of Sidebottom - do you disagree?

His performance was more than could possibly have been expected of him - for that he deserves everyone's congratulations

Rob: do everyone a favour and READ a post before replying. All I have done is sound a note of caution. Blimey, you'd thing Siders was the second coming - even if he has actually got the hair for it.

Really? You think?! And the competition for that title is so fierce - Paul Taylor anyone?

B@s, seems you're fighting a one-man war against stupidity. Good luck.

The whole thread is a stupid reaction to Lapidary's tongue in cheek remark "'E's been lucky", which set all the resident village idiots foaming at their respective mouths.

I think you did a bit more than just add caution. This WI side wasn't great but anyone who follows cricket regularly would know that the qualities that SiBo showed in this test would make him effective elsewhere and also that some of those deliveries would have got much better batsmen out. Naturally the talk now is about how he'll perform against India but some people are already talking of dropping him if the India series doesn't go well when those same people would give countless chances to other bowlers. My point is, let's not talk about the india series as being decisive...that's just waiting for someone to fail. Give him the same chance that other bowlers have had. After all, he has shown that he can do a lot with the ball (not just conventional swing either) and that is refreshing to see when Engand's bowlers have shown such an appalling lack of skill in recent times.

I never have, but it will be a better guide as to his long term worth to England.

Taylor got two sporadic shots at Test cricket... barely got a chance. Not in contention. At least Mullaly got some success.

Sidebottom and Panesar added 31 runs for the last wicket against the West Indies. Is this the hairiest recorded partnership in Test cricket?

Lets reserve judgement until after the India series?

He bowls a good line, not much dross, pace varies from 81-6mph and swings it into the right handers and i like his aggression.

Ticks all the boxes so far.
