Someone can put them in their correct order please.

Ponting
Rhodes
Taylor
Randall
Hooper
Richards V
Waugh M
Symmonds

Then this thread will have achieved its desired result.

Since several people (including me) have rated Harper number 1, how can your list represent a consensus?

I failed to see Harper getting more votes than Ponting or even Symmonds for that matter. Just the fact of getting a coupla mentions in dispatches doesn't rate a number one in my book.
Sorry Peter.

They're the only three I can remember with any vividity. And that's the order I'd have them in. Symonds is the best all-round fielder that I've ever seen, followed by Jonte. Ponting comes in a close 3rd with his catching and stump-shattering abilities.

Where is Sobers?

WG Grace was supposed to be an unbelievable fielder.

There are plenty as good as Ponting. Collingwood for one.

You might want to look up what the word consensus means.

Grace was a tub-o-lardy type like Leverock and it would have been both scientifically AND a physical immpossibilty to have been able to move around in any sort of fashion that would endear people to call you the worlds greatest fielder.!!

Strange though it may seem, WG Grace spent some time under the age of 40.

Through most of this period he was slim, fit and extremeley athletic. In fact he was a champion athlete.

His ground fielding was almost as revolutionary as his batting on the uneven paddocks of the 1870s.

Just how old ARE YOU TYA.?
I mean how on earth would you know this stuff. Any film archive footage or pictures that I have seen have been of this heavy set bearded old man. Not the thin athletic type you speak of. Oh I suppose he may well have been camera shy in his under 40 years. That would explain just why there are no photo,s of this thinnish athletic fellow you mention.

Roger should definitely be in there.

Rhodes at the bottom. Can't catch, can't throw!

OK i adnit it. I was born in 1856. One day in 1900 I strayed into a police telephone box by mistake and suddenly found myself transported 115 years into the future. Quite a shock i can tell you. (The ring-pull beer can is a great advance in the living standard of the common man though).

As for WG, Cameras were pretty rare in the 1870s. They didn't even have SLR let alone digital. By the late 1880s they did at least have something reasonably mobile.

Nonetheless, If you browse through a good biography i think you will find one or two photos from his 20s.

KKK:
The man's name is SYMONDS. Andrew SYMONDS.
Note: THERE IS ONLY ONE 'M'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, go away, and type 'Symonds' (with ONLY ONE 'M') repeatedly until it becomes second nature. With any luck, by the time you finish you'll be as old as WG was when those photos were taken.
