B0ll0cks to all that cr@p Rob.

Pick your best bowlers and your best batters. And away you go.

Don't agree with that Charles- Aussies would have won the series 3-1 without the big fella.

GOd these arguments have been running for years......

Yeh, broadcasting the fact he was seeing a psychologist re. crowd barracking was not the smartest thing. The ECB really need to sort out their PR dept.
I think that ultimately the only thing that will shake Panasar is if the Oz bats take him apart. Whether they will be able to is an unknown at the moment

Giles has had the opportunity to show that he can deal with the pressure and that he can shrug off and come through the unpleasantness he was subjected to in the lead up to 2005 Ashes and post-Lords.

Giles is certainly a tough nut and all power to him for that.

I'm not Welsh........Isn't it?

Its in the past. The bloke hasn't been able to run for 12 months hardly. Don't get me wrong, he was pivotal to the ashes I agree, but now in the present he needs to be shelved! He's got his golden handshake contract I think.

Just out of interest, four spinners have taken over 100 test wickets in the last 30 years for England.

Tufnell, 121 at 38.
Edmonds 125 at 34.
Giles 140 at 40
Emburey 147 at 38.

We're not quite comparing equally here however as the other 3 have completed their career. We're observing Giles stats from their worst point of his career. But clearly they are not good, as are none of the others. In further defence of Ashley's stats, run rates are generally higher these days, all round.

I'm not sure doosra bowlers can be described as orthodox. Sure, the ball comes out the front of the hand, but they bowl a hell of a lot with the wrist. If we decide to include doosra bowlers in this catagory then I have to concede that Ashley is a lot further from the average than I was suggesting. But for the point of comparison, it seems to me they are bowling copmpletely different stuff.

People used to say that Vaughany should bowl more. Now it's KP (who looks a lot worse than MPV to me). Do people really think that these part timers are anywhere near Giles as a slow bowler? I don't get that at all.

I also tend to feel that ten tests is too few to judge Monty. Encouraging though his start has been. But I'm confident he'll do well. Furthermore, if he takes 10 wickets this winter, scores 155 runs including, something like, a match winning cameo and a series securing 50, takes all his catches and maybe chucks in a run out- then I'll feel he had a really good series. Or maybe say a few more wickets and a few less runs.

And if he doesn't do that well, I'll still believe in him as a really useful talent.

I reckon Monty will probably play. And that's great. And I'm pleased that Gilo is there in support, or to step in if needed. Really can't see us playing two spinners, even at Sydney. It's my belief that we've never played two spinners out of the subcon in the six years Fletcher has been in charge.

We'll see I guess..... Saj or Pudsey at 8 aren't exactly convincing though.

Lack of runs doesn't really matter, all the English tailenders need to do is stick around while Freddie or KP try to tee off from the other end. At a guess, Dizzy has been a part of more 100+ partnerships than Bung, despite the latter having a better average.

The Ashes last year did fair well for Giles (maybe not in bowling) but it faired well for him as a batsman and fielder. However, that series was in England. Things are very different in Australia, Giles should retire after the Ashes and should play alongside Monty for the entire series.

Ha ha.
I can't wait until Ashley gets his knighthood for services to cricket after caning the Aussies this winter.
Scared?
You should be messers; Hayden, Martyn, Clarke, Ponting (Gilo's rabbit)..........
Kylie Minogue, Rolf Harris, Nick Cave, your boys are gonna take one hell of a beating at the hands of super spinner Ashley.
Long live Ashley and all who support him.

Nah Mr Lever.
I can assure you I am 100% English. It is true I do like a good wind up but I really am genuine when I advocate young Ashley for an Ashes role. In an in-experienced team he has a vital position to fill - either in or out of it.

Giles contribution to the last Ashes was a massive 155 runs @ 19.38 and 10 wickets @ 57.80. That is pretty bad considering all the England bowlers combined took 85 wickets conceding 2691 runs at an average of 31.66 - and that includes the part timers!

He does have a reasonable record from his one Test down under
