Ponting aims whitewash against India in one-dayers
New Delhi, June 15: Australian captain Ricky Ponting said Thursday that his world champion team would be able to whitewash India in the seven-match one-day series in September.
"Hopefully we will win every match. India will be coming in to the series after playing a lot of games in Ireland and England. Whereas, we will kick off our season right after only playing the Twenty20 World Championship in South Africa," Ponting said here.
It's gonna be a tough series and we expect a good fight from India."
India will take on Australia in the matches starting Sep 29 in Bangalore.
Ponting also said that he is expecting India to have a tough time against England in the upcoming Test series.
"England are playing very good cricket. Although the West Indies have been affected by Brian Lara's retirement. India may find the going tough against England in alien conditions," he said.
Ponting also said that the Indian selectors can follow their Australian counterparts while managing the transition of players in the team.
"I think the Australian selectors handled it very well. Whenever there was a group of players of the same age on the verge of retirement, they brought in youngsters regularly," he pointed out.
"I think it would leave a big hole if the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble leave the game at the same time," he said.
Gonna be a full on period for cricket on the crystal bucket...

Ponting won't have to try hard. After another unsucessful overseas tour the last thing the "old boys" of Indian Cricket would want is a 7 match contest against the combative Aussies. Ponting and Co simpoly will help drive more nails into the coffin. Then there is the tour down under to come still. Going to be an excruciating death for Indian cricket over the next 8 months or so.
One does feel sorry for the bechara fan who lives in eternal hope. I Hope that the ICL is up and running by September/October so that he/she atleast has some options to tune into something else. On the other hand it is also the immaturity of the average fan that is helping propogate this circus. One would have thought that the WC would have sent a clear message, obviously not. They want more and for sure they will get more of the same pathetic performances.

No, I think he's both confused and extremely thick. How else could you explain these two statements he allegedly made: "Ricky Ponting said Thursday that his world champion team would be able to whitewash India in the seven-match one-day series in September...." and "It's gonna be a tough series and we expect a good fight from India." Maybe he forgot he would be playing in India....
Geez, he can't win can he? Says stuff about respecting the opposition but is labeled confused and extremely thick

Ummmm...No. This isn't the only interview he's given in the last few days. On one of them he was positively jumping up and down about India's chances in England and how he'd like it if we won. This one he's ambiguous, slightly leaning towards England, in another he backs England.

...but thanks for your input, anyway.

Talking about being thick . . . Your first quote was obviously written by the reporter, and the second was what Ponting said. Typical press exaggeration of Ponting's comments.

I agree. But then how would you describe the triseries potpourris played by Australia at home? Three times against each other then three finals? IMO, anything over 3 ODIs in a series stops being funny and is just a money-spinner. It doesn't matter who's playing who.
At least it's 3 teams and spread around the country to provide for fans in each state to be able to see their team live.
And how is that any different from India playing Australia 7 times in India (within the context of this thread)? I'm assuming you know how large India really is - and it isn't just the coastline.
Australia generally play just the one "trisereies" at home each year. That's all the fans get. It seems that India play lengthy one-day series against each team that tours as well as stand alone ODI series. No?
What has that got to do with the length of a series home or away? For your information: AUS ODIs 659 - 326 (H), 210 (AW), 123 (Neutral) IND ODIs 648 - 222 (H), 197 (AW), 229 (Neutral) You'll have to do better than that to make a striking argument.
