My office window is about 10 yards from a children's hospital helipad and it's always upsetting when the air ambulance arrives. This afternoon I was on the way between our 2 office sites when the helicopter landed and the kiddie on the stretcher they brought out can't have been more than 3 years old (if that).

It's so frustrating (as well as upsetting) because one of my nursing qualifications is chilren's nursing and it always reminds me how desperately I want to go back to my old career, but thanks to the government and the NHS who'd pay me the pathetic sum of £150 a MONTH for the 5 months it would take to do a refrehser course and go back, I can never do it.

I'd scream but it wouldn't help. Frown Crying

Could you not volunteer some time on the ward visiting the children and entertaining them? Smile

No - it's not working with children I miss, it's nursing and using the skills I worked hard to learn. I don't have time to take on a voluntary job as I work full-time and there's no scope for evening volunteering. Thanks for the reply though. Valentine

Well I could tell you that, it's a bummer not being able to do what you really would love to, but unfortunately life is a crock and isn't that kind.

But that isn't very cheeful so instead I'll just tell you to look around and be grateful that the job you have got has it's benefits Hug....hopefully Ninja

I think it's a no-go, I'm afraid - have to be currently registered to do it and can't get my registration back until I do the course. There used to be a loophole that said if you were on the course, you could practice but that was changed. Unless they changed it back again - must do some checking.

I only intended to have a short break after the last nursing job (nursing home where they had me working 6 12-hour shifts a week and I didn't have a weekend day off for 5 months!) but when my registration was due for renewal I couldn't afford to pay for it. So unless they've opened up the loophole, I can't do it. Working the rest of the week as a HCA wouldn't pay me enough to make ends meet - I'd have to work full time hours to earn enough and the course is 4 days a week!

I will do some more checking about NHSP but I'm pretty sure I couldn't do it. Frown

SRN, SCM, RSCN, BSc in Palliative Care and Cancer Nursing - all going to waste! Seems ridiculous - it would be so much more logical to pay people like me a realistic wage to do the return course than to leave the vacancies. But I'm only a nurse so what do I know? Roll Eyes

right - what about this

join NHSP as an HCA - because of your experience you will be able to demand a band 3
You can then work what and how you like and in the meantime get your back to nursing qualication
And I'll tell you something blondie, if you have a children's qualification then you will be inundated with work.
are you on FB by aany chance cos I could really help you with this
