Just interested to know what others think about this. I'm shocked at how often I see people writing in text speak on the forums, on email etc. I can understand it when you're actually texting (I do that too) but otherwise...

When did we get so lazy that this is now the norm and the written word regularly consists of 'wot, ppl, u, l8tr'?

Arrrgggh!! It drives me mad!!

I think it is one of the signs of the times. It is a sign of decay and laziness and disinterest. Actually I do not even use text speak when I text but that is a personal choice. I agree with the O/P with regard to other forms of communication.

I text my husband a few times every day and neither of us has ever used 'txt spk'. We text in correct English spelling and grammar.

some abbreviations are ok on the likes of a forum but I wouldnt use them in a letter, report or the like, when I would use the correct Eng Lang - if you get a thread which is all text speak and local dialect its often difficult to understand and if its too difficult to read I just move on to the next thread which then defeats the reason for the thread being there in the first place if people like me give it a miss

im blinking glad we don't still talk like shakespearian times so we have to allow the the generations to evolve
and come on, who said the english language is that great anyway, may be an improvement

though it does annoy me alot when the "text term" is as long as the real word, like "woz"....whats the blinking point in that

It is down in the rules and regulations on many forums - including this one and DS - that you don't use text speak as it is considered bad manners and difficult for many people to understand.

I can't stand it and I never ever use it - not even in texting. Anyway I have my phone set to predictive texting where you CAN'T do text speak.

language constantly changes. It's a fact in every language and develops organically: a lot of what folk think is 'proper' English now would have made people faint in shock in the 50's.

My friend uses predictive text and meant to ask her sister if she'd enjoyed the big rides at Alton Towers. She didn't check before it went and she asked if she'd enjoyed any 'big sheep'. Laugh

Text speak is fine for text but, other than that, should not be used. Our language does evolve it is true but I hope it does not descend into text speak.

I know a lot of people say spelling doesn't matter but, to me, it is important and should be learnt at an early age. If children are shown the value of reading they will learn to spell better but, again, unfortunately, these days most are glued to their TVs or play stations instead of reading books.

One of my main gripes is when I see signs in windows, for instance, our local greengrocers advertising their letuce, selery, avacodos and cauliflour for sale Mad
