I hate the way people these days don't know about the First or Second World War, it's a disgrace! Big Brother should make them have a few history lessons while they are in there!

But for the Holiday thing, some people in the New England area celebrate Guy Fawkes day and have bonfires, plays and fireworks. And many non-Irish people around the World celebrate St Paddy's day...I know it seems odd but it's not anything bad.

And while Darnell was born in England, he grew up in America, and many people say what they are is from where they have grown up. Jerry Springer was born in England but calls himself an American. Kim Cattrall was born in England but classes herself as Canadian.

Sad but true. The future choice of this country will be, do we join because USE (United States Of Europe) or USA. I think being anglo, we're going that way. Our little island won't be a nation state in a few decades time and we won't have a say of its intended future. It's written on the cards at the moment.

I think one of the USA,s biggest fears is that there will one day be a USE (United Sates of Europe) an Idea that I think has legs, because then we (the USE) would be big enough, rich enough and strong enough to be a challenge to them, indeed a future war between a USE and the USA would be almost inevitable what with the planets dwindling resources n all that, Nod

Well said Kim
I'm actually spending my day off reading the lut so that I can get updated.
My eyes have been opened today reading these posts I must say. I enjoy learning about other cultures beside my own American one. We don't have so much hate here.

TheatreCat I have heard this and many other rumours about Churchill and what he or the British knew both during WW2 and WW1 (the sinking of the Lusitania 1915 and the attempts by Britain to get the USA to join the allies against the central powers Germany Austro_hungary and Turkey in the First World War). By the summer of 1941 the US, Japan, Germany USSR and Britain knew an attack on the US by Japan was highly likely and when the US placed an oil embargo on Japan in the autumn of 1941 it was inevitable. Britain needed an ally like the US to join the war against Hitler and Japan, alone Britain could not fight a global war (the empire was dying especially after 1918) and Russia was looking like they were going to be defeated by Germany in the autumn of 1941 (the siege of Stalingrad hadn't reached a conclusion at this point). Had Germany defeated the USSR by the end of 1941 and the US remained neutral then Britain would have had to ask Hitler for peace. Likely Britian would have kept its empire but Germany would have picked off the best bits (India, the British mandated middle east territories ie Iraq, Palestine (Isreal).
The irony of the two world wars of the 20th century is that they were originally an Anglo-German conflict over European domination (Britain has always supported an independent low countries as it has never wanted one dominant European power (Spain- the Armada, France Napoleon and Waterloo, Germany 1914-1918 and Hitler and Second world war). By fighting for the world we enjoy today and not one based on fascist totalitarian racial grounds we lost an empire and the country who won the empire was the USA.

So ends today History class sorry all those who hate history but this thread demanded some knowledgeable responses. Thanks everyone

Dunno if that's true, maybe Dillont will have a better idea, but if it is then they didn't save our asses back then they just did our bidding. Wink

But they have an American housemate in there this year. Maybe that's why they're celebrating it. I can't remember them ever doing so other years.

I think the worse thing which could happen for us is if we go closer to the rest of Europe.. I'd rather we be part of Hell than have a United Europe.

Don't know what irritates me most really, the americanising of Britain or the Anglicising of Britain.
Confused

It's Ok for the English here, they only have the USA flooding their culture. Us Celts get swamped by the cultural imperialism of them and England Mad

oh and to keep on topic Wink some of the house mates were asking "what does "D" day stand for?"
it doesnt STAND for anything D day is simply the military code for the day that the attack or campaign starts, the invasion of North African, Sicily and Italy, ALL had a D day,
its just that now when people mention D day its become the day the invasion of Europe started (6th June 1944)
a day that slips by with hardly a mention these days yet it is FAR more important to US than the 4th of July, Nod
