I have just watched the programme for the second time and have yet again found Claire and her 1950s approach torturous to watch. I am horrified and shocked that this approach exists and is allowed to exist.

She does not have an ounce of love or compassion in her and what she recommmends appears no better than complete child neglect and abuse. I have shouted at the television and I can't stop thinking about those poor babies. How can she say that this is for the good of teh baby? I feel like crying - new born babies don't know how to be manipulative - they have spent 9 months in a cosy environment, listening to the heartbeat of their mother and they are suddenly thrust into the world and denied love and affection and ignored!

I completely agree about this being like an orphanage. I have seen children first hand in such an environment and apart from the money involved, the 'care' appears identical.

Wake up people - don't let this woman convince you that what you are doing is right! She needs to be struck off. I need to do something and I don't know what. Any ideas on what action can be taken?

I said the same thing when the old witch said that!! Three and a half hours screaming, alone, outdoors!! I felt for their poor mother, between her husband and Claire, she was truly cornered! Surely we'd have social services banging on the door if we took to leaving our babies screaming outside for hours!!

social services wouldn't think twice about rapping us on the wrists if we allowed our children to cry outdoors for 3 1/2 hours!!!
though i have to say how can these people (i also am not calling them parents) not have put their foot down and said no these are my children i will not allow you to encourage us to treat them this way, if that were me i would have brought them inand bundled them into my arms for some love and attention, my daughter is perfecly well in a routine and i have not once ever lfet her to cry for anything over 15 minutes!!!
as for the earlier question for what someone can do.. complain to huggies, tommee tippee and the baby show for endorsing this woman. watching this lady abuse babies like this has left me very upset and angry!!

I watched the show for the first time this evening and I can honestly say that after watching Clair whats her names approach made me cry. I really felt for those poor babies, but at the same time the parents are allowing her to influence them and it's their fault also. There is no way I would let that cow tell me how to be with my son.. I did not have him to think that he is an inconvenience in my life. Nor, do I think that I would ever go out to dinner and leave him with some one as horrible with her. aaarrrrggghhh... I am so upset and frustrated now I can't even go to bed,I have gone and checked on my son four times already... I am disgusted, but why would those parents let her do it... I would tell her to bugger off!

You can complain to Ofcom here:

http://www.ofcom.org.uk/complain/progs/specific/?itemid=286480

I have, and I would urge you to as well. Also, I have complained to Huggies, who sponsor the show. I am sure they will remove their sponsorship if they receive enough complaints - they will not want to be associated with the abuse of newborn children. You can contact them here:

Minni78: I think that the parents (mothers) who have come on the programme for their fifteen minutes of fame will regret this decision for the rest of their lives. Bonding with your baby creates independent confident happy children not needy children. Being told to rise above your babies attention seeking is just bizarre language and I feel sorry for the other mentors who have to be in the same room and argue with the her. These parents will be creating lasting damage to their babies and themselves.

We DO have a RIGHT to judge the families on the programme, excuse me !! They volunteered to go on the programme, no one forced them into their choices (no matter how vulnerable you are when a baby is born, you still DO have common sense, a brain and mostly importantly maternal instinct to guide you). You do not lose your brain with the placenta !

those families but themselves under the spotlight and knew what they were getting into when they signed away 3 months of their lives that claire verity should be stood up to. the whole thing is wrong mothers are very vulnerable in the first weeks after birth. she maynot be being "manipulated" by her babies but she is being manipulated by that vile woman and a pushy husband

One other thing. Does anybody here believe that any of the three so called guru's took part in the programme for selfless reasons?

I am led to believe the promoter of the 1970's method Claire Scott, manufactures a brand of sling (why is she on this programme hmmm?). We all know about Claire (the antichrist is scared of me, £1000 a pop,) Verity and I am sure the 1960's method as put forward by Dreena Hamilton, will not do its champion any financial harm.

Had many of us heard of these three until this programme was aired?

In summary, the families that took part are nothing short of being guinea pigs and part of an advertising campaign. The only person who has shot herself in the head is Claire (hell wont have her,) Verity.

It is another point that shoots the validity of this whole debacle down in flames. If the series was a genuine attempt at informing first time parents of their choices they should have at least got people with no financial interest based on self-promotion. This whole pile of visual effluent is nothing more than a massive sensationalist advert at the expense of unsuspecting parents and new-born babies. Mad

Why does everyone expect one TV program to solve this age old debate? This is just another TV program and while I agree Claire Verity seems to be going too far I don't think many people think she is right.

The point is to get everyone thinking for themselves and to give them some food for thought. And yes probably the people involved have something to gain, but isn't that fair enough. Likely there were many reasons they decided to take part, even a strong belief in their method and a desire to share it. Claire Scott didn't raise her children by this method just to sell more slings did she?

I must own my bias I am a Continuum Concept Mum and have to say even though it is being skewed a little by editing I am still glad to see the idea thrown out there for everyone to consider. At the end of the day you don't need to follow any method strictly unless you are incapable of independent thought. And I must say it is the 50s methods Mums who seem to display this trait. There is a lot of oh I am not sure and Yes Claire No Claire from those Mums more so than the other methods.
All very interesting in my opinion and I doubt that many people will go along with Claire Verity as she comes across to me at least as being very closed-minded, small-minded and rude quite frankly.

No it is not fair enough.

It is fair if mothers who used these methods previously are interviewed with regard to their personal experience.

It is fair enough to look at the history of each method.

It is fair enough to look at the failings of each method.

It is fair enough to include modern scientific/medical thinking from the year 2007.

It is fair enough to have an intelligent debate between people who favour each of these methods.

It is NOT fair to use new-born babies as a component in a social experiment.

It is NOT fair to use new parents as a component in a social experiment.

It is NOT fair to subject these families to the ideologies of people who MAY have something else to gain other than what they perceive to be educating the masses in the correct method in child rearing.

It is NOT fair to use families who are not fully aware of the results of being put up for scrutiny by the general public on a television series.

It is NOT fair to put families and their babies into the hands of a person who will irrevocably destroy the experience of bonding with their children and all the other associated joys. Joys that will never be recovered.

It is NOT fair using a woman’s or a baby’s distress as a part of the whole edutainment package.

It is NOT bloody fair, full stop, to use new-born baby’s in ANY kind of programme that affects their early development and happiness for the sake of profits, advertising and promotions. Mad

Woah some strong feelings on this one eh

Great! That is the spirit of debate we need, yes you are right on the issues of the newborns and their mothers losing out, but is that about TV or is that is the choice of those parents of how to raise their children, parents choose bad methods everyday and this show is getting us to question them.

There is a resposibility of ch 4 to advise them that they do not have to do this and whether that happened should be under question. And you should continue to advise OFCOM etc that perhaps ch4 etc is taking advantage and I support you in that.

'That is fair enough' simply referred to how the mentors reached their decision in taking part in this program:
+ I want to share my method and allow more families to benefit from it
+ I want to help a family with a method I believe in
Plus
+ I might get more hits on my webite is a bonus, knowing this might happen and that they might benefit as well is not a good reason NOT to do the show why not accept that benefit.
That is all I meant but I am sorry that it sounded too flippant I can see now that it may have sounded careless.

I too feel the same about these kids, I follow the Contnuum Concept for goodness sakes and in fact I have felt for these kids long b4 this show came out. I am simply glad that more people are now concerned about them cause it is in our faces. It has always been there it is not ch4 doing it is just now that more people can say hey don't do that it is crazy. And can consider more ideas. But it is just a TV program and it will not save the world or ruin it for that matter.

Also I would LOVE to see some real debate and education on this issue heaven knows there is a heck of a lot of mis-information and myths and bad priorities surrounding the issue of child raising. Please keep pushing for it GF and I hope that people would watch it, I for one would.

Parents have different priorities in what they want for their children and what their families as a whole need not just the parents needs but the infant and other children and I think what is needed is a new think about what we really want. Rather than "Is she sleeping through yet?". We should be thinking about what helps a child develop physically and emotionally to the optimum and indeed to the good enough in respect of the family situation. Then how do we achieve this.
That is what I want to see and you are right you do not need a test family for that perhaps just interviews with a variety of families and experts and grown children of the various ideas. Bring that on I say

I totally agree with you and I have complained to both Channel 4 and Offcom. It is crazy that the makers of this programme are allowing this "Creature From The Black Lagoon" treat new born babies in this way.

Please, please make a complaint, with OFCOM, with NSPCC, this is cruelty to children.
This woman shouldn't be allowed to care for anyone who is vulnerable. Imagine if she gave similar advice regarding the care of elderly!

Heavens, she woulnd't allow the relatives to look at the babies saying that babies don't need their germs. How about the germs from the cameraman, the germs from the lighting crew and whatever else kind of people that are involved in making this programme!

i do agree with you whole heartedly emiky, but at the same time i think the point needs to be raised that fresh air is good for babies... we sound like we keep our children locked up at all times.
4 hours is stupidly excessive and in todays society to leave them alone is too dangerous for words. my daughter was born in the middle of our burning hot summer last year and i would put her outside my patio doors with the doors open and me sat by them for a period of time, but also lets not forget that all the 'germs' are to a degree also good for our childrens immune systems, please no body mis interpret that i agree with any of that sadists methods but i do feel that we are missing the point that these methods were used to a degree and are again in a very watered down way being used today i.e controlled crying... as well as others!!

Hi there, after watching 2 episodes of this programme I was completely horrified, frustrated, and deeply angered by Claire Verity's ignorance and the stupidity of the parents that allow her to abuse their children. I duly complained to OfCom and to Kimberly-Clark, followed by signing up to the Govement petition against TV programmes of this nature. See Kimberly-Clark's totally inadequate response below.

I am so appalled by this programme I don't think I can bring myself to watch it again. I am not a parent myself (hoping to be soon), but as a psychologist I am painfully aware of the long term damage that the 1950s baby rearing method will cause to those babies. It is just too painful to watch...

Anyway, see for yourselves Kimberly-Clark's response.
