If you had a neighbour with a newborn baby and you could hear the baby screaming for hours on end, you noticed that the baby was shut out in the garden with no adult supervision, that your neighbour seemed to never cuddle their child or give eye contact and that they were having house parties until 4am, would you consider reporting them to social services as I know I would.

Just because this 50s method has been given a name and is being shown on television does not make it acceptable in any way. It is abuse and neglect plain and simple.

Personally I think that social services should be paying a visit to those parents.

I personally think that these parents could do much worse. Not saying in anyway I find it acceptable to leave week old babies out in the cold for hours on end crying. Since I know from personal experience with my Niece, the social services do much less for more serious things than this.

I do wonder about this, there's that poor girl Fran Lyon with a history of mental health problems because of rape but she is perfectly fine now very bright and working etc. She is pregnant and they are planning to take her baby away. For no good reason whatsoever.
Yet people are allowed to treat their babies the Verity way and that's apparently ok!

I don't know much about the workings of the social services but what I have seen on tv etc and heard about around their work has shown me that they aren't doing the kind of effective job I would have hoped for.
I'm sure they work hard to get these serious wrongs sorted out but history dictates to me that the government may be doing little to improve the current state of them.
As I said, I don't know for sure but that is how it appears to me. If anyone could enlighten me I would appreciate it!

"Neglect
Journalst briefing, May 2007
Definition
Neglect is the persistent failure to meet a child's basic physical and/or psychological needs, likely to result in the serious impairment of the child's health or development. Neglect may occur during pregnancy as a result of maternal substance abuse. Once a child is a born, neglect may involve a parent or carer failing to provide adequate food and clothing, shelter including exclusion from home or abandonment, failing to protect a child from physical and emotional harm or danger, failure to ensure adequate supervision including the use of inadequate care-takers, or the failure to ensure access to appropriate medical care or treatment it may also include neglect of, or unresponsiveness to, a child's basic emotional needs.
(Working Together to Safeguard Children 2006)"

In answer to your question; yes, I think the NSPCC and Social Services should be involved.

I really feel for that poor lady Fran lyon who is going to have her child removed for no reason other to satisfy govert adoption targets. I wonder why social services are not involved in the programme, as the 1950's method is a form of neglect.

wow if you left a baby outside round my area it would get stolen!
or a cat would take a fancying to it

i hate being away from my little one for a second i even leave the bathroom door open while i have a shower just in case he starts to cry!
if you were crying for whatever reason.... would it make you stop being shuvved outside?
in 3rd world countrys when people visit the orphans they are never crying....... its because they know no one will listen
no one will feed them or comfort them
so surely puttin the baby out side is another way of neglecting to comfort your baby who lets face it has no idea of this new world its been born in to at all.
why do they call it the 50s method .... clearly because it was never used befor then... and only was around for a short while!!!!!!
now people think they can justify there lazyness and inability to parent by giving it a name!!!!!
bahhhhhhhhhhhh humbug 50s method you go back to the 50s where u belong!!!!!!!

im so happy i have all i cud wish for and more

i think the poor girl should keep her baby but be closely monitored for some time after she has the baby, after all, if she did harm the baby, everyone would be up in arms and totally slate social services for not getting involved! but takng the baby away is much too drastic!

Hi there well first of all I think social services have a hard job to do, I don't know much about the lady you are talking about however I have a friend and social services took her baby, not because of her but because of her partner, however she now has got her baby back, I would agree she shouldn't have the baby taken from her , but maybe be closely monitored, I sometimes wonder about the whole social services, they take peoples children, have them adopted and gain money from it, which I think is wrong, I personal believe sometimes it's the easy option for them to take rather than help parents which is sad really. They do all kinds of positive parenting courses, but I surpose it comes down to money like everything else.
