Just wanted to ask a quick question. My 14 month old son recently went completely cold turkey from breastfeeding. It was as if he forgot what to do. He was not weaned off the breast onto formula, and he does not like cows milk, he spits it out when I give it him. The books I have read talk about weaning the child off the breast gradually, as this didnt happen with mine, I was just wondering if anyone had similar experiences with their children and how they coped with it.

Hi,

Has anything new just happened in his life?? SOmetimes nursing toddlers go on a nursin strike when they go through a developmental milestone, has he just started walking or something maybe?

Nothing like that, everything was going as normal, he has been walking for a good few months now, and there was no difference in lifestyle, he literally went from feeding 7 times a night to nothing in the space of 24 hours.

After he stopped feeding, his sleeping through the night improved, and he goes to sleep just with a cuddle now.

I know of mom's who said their babies stopped when they were pregnant with the next one, but that hasn't happened to me either.

It is a mystery, and the books do not really mention total abstinence when stopping breastfeeding, but he did it, who am I to argue?

YOur son might just be ready to stop breastfeeding and it may be his way of saying so. Have you tried expressing milk into a cup for him, mabey he might preferr it that way.

My daughter did much the same thing at around 9 months old, I had to go into hospital for a day and couldn't feed her, when I got back and offered her the breast she took a sip and then crawled away, she wouldn't have any more after that. Perhaps your son has just decided he doesn't want it anymore.

Keep an eye on him to make sure he's not sickening for something, if he's eating and drinking normally then I wouldn't worry about it. If you are worried about his calcium intake makesure you give him plenty of yoghurts, cheese and milky dishes and sauces (i.e. cheese sauce, custard, rice pudding, etc.).

I am pretty sure that my little boy has just decided that he doesnt need breastmilk anymore, and he has not had any for about 2 weeks now. Although he doesnt drink milk, he does have yougurt and cereals with milk, and he enjoys different types of fish.

I was just surprised at the suddenness of his finishing breastfeeding, especially as I couldn't find any info regarding suddenly stopping breastfeeding.

He is eating loads now, and sleeping through the night, so it does have the positives. As much as I miss him feeding, I do enjoy the extra cuddles I am getting now.
