She claims she is practising the Truby King way. Sorry to disapoint her but she isnt. Truby King's training is better known in New Zealand as Karitane MOthercraft NUrsing or Plunket Nurses. The Plunket Nurses are the same as your Health Visitors here in the UK. The mothercraft nurse was trained in a hospital to care for the newborn up to 18th months.

Part of the training was to teach the parents TLC - tender loving care.

Yes, the training was rigid back in the 70's. I know I am a Mothercraft Nurse and I object strongly to her labelling herself as teaching parents the Truby King way. I myself have complained to Channel 4 however it seems like they are keen to misrepresent Truby King.

If they were so eager to get a Truby King way of parenting perhaps they should have sourced a Truby King nurse not one who makes out she is.

Truby King played an important role in NZ's society to protect the unborn baby and through his imput reduced the amount of deaths in newborns for his time.

Like Claire I am a maternity nurse, I have worked for celebrities and worked throughout America, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Europe however I do teach my parents to listen to their babies, to hold them if they need it as much as possible in the first few weeks and to sleep with them if they need it. I believe babies need a lot of nuturing when they first enter this world.

You sound very knowledgeable about Truby King methods. I was brought up in the 50's by the routine method, but my mother - being German - would probably not have heard of Truby King. There must have been other influential paediatricians of that time or just prior to it.
It also sounds as if - from what you are saying, Dorothy - that Channel 4 did not research the background of Claire Verity and the methods of Truby King before employing her for this programme.

I am most disappointed to watch Claire method. As a mother of a 7 month baby i cry for parents who would do that. I found the method rather unnatural! For heaven sake we have instincts! why leave your baby out in the cold alone crying for four hours? i would never do that!

I dont agree with her method because:-
a) Its selfish- meeting the needs or feelings of the parents first and not meeting the child's needs first.

b) What if the child was choking or unwell and u ignored them first?

c) Where are our God given natural instincts working here?

d) Children communicate by crying. How would you feel if you spoke to someone and they just walk out on you?

Rather disturbing to watch her! i presume she is not even a mother herself!

No wonder she's turned out this way since she was left to cry at the bottom of the garden!! Anyone who pays Claire Verity money to train their babies is crazy. There's no great pride in being able to go out for dinner as a couple a few days after your baby is born, if you're leaving your precious babies in the hands of that witch. Follow her principles if you want your child to be childless and cold as she is as an adult.
We've had our 3 sons co-sleep with us for as long as they wanted. They love cuddling and so do we. They're not going to want to be cuddled and hugged forever - now that the older one's 7, he's wiping my lipstick marks off his cheeks, so I'm glad we enjoyed them as babies and toddlers.
Co-sleeping could hurt/kill babies if you overdrink, smoke or do drugs, which I assume most parents don't. I've gotten more sleep with my baby near me than lifting him in and out of his cot all night long.
