hi again, you lot are so full of diffrent opinions but i want to start a debate that will hopefully help as a guide for us all
when it comes to baby products we can really get some mixed feelings... like is it good to use the reccomended ammount of bubble bath for baby even though your health visitor says dont use that certain brand. im not sure if we can mention brand names???? once i find out it will be more usefull ha ha ha
my little boy recently got a rash from baby oil(a well known one) well thats wat the health vis said
but the doc said it was his cold that gave him it, yet i still have yet another lotion and potion to use.....a medicated baby wash . cream
so on this page i would like to rate the good ideas that work fantastic and discard the useless ones

one good tip i have is if you find it hard to wash babys hair because he dislikes water in his eyes (by accident ) then use a baby sponge to control where water goes and helps get water to quickly wash the hair.

i want to write about products too but i dont want my thread removed so are we alowed to???

im so happy i have all i cud wish for and more

Hi Glitteremma
I was told to only use water without any products to wash my baby (until he starts crawling and getting really mucky!) and that is what I did. However my baby has very dry skin and appears to be developing a tendency to excema (like me!) despite being breastfed and not exposed to any baby products.... so now I sometimes use a little emollient bath oil in his washng water and put a little E45 on him on the recommendation of my HV. (hope I'm allowed to mention this product!)
I also give him a massage sometimes with grapeseed oil and use camomile ointment on his nappy area if it looks slightly pink and so far have avoided any nappy rash or sore skin.
To be honest I hardly ever bath him - he has a good wash on his mat everyday and gets in the bath with me once a week.
I think probably the main problem with any products is that people use too many products, too often, and too much of each product. They are so tempting though in their nice packets and with their lovely scents!

Hi, I have to be very careful with my baby as she has excema and so only use products prescribed for her. I look at all the baskets of baby toiletries that I got as presents which are now gathering dust and wonder what I am going to with them!

I don't bath every day either - only every other day. One thing I can recommed and which seems to help with the water is taking them to a "Water Babies" class. We went for one term and then had to stop due to her excema. But the class was fantastic...swimming underwater etc and really helps with their confidence. It also really tires them out (!!)

Hi Karen, I also got loads of baby toiletries as gifts from friends and family and they are taking up lots of cupboard space in our cramped flat. My brother's wife is expecting a baby in April and I was going to give some to her and then I thought it was probably unfair to give them things they won't use either (mind you they have a bigger house than me and more cupboards!)
How old was your daughter when you took her to water babies?

She was 14 weeks!! She absolutely loved it - was such a shame when we had to stop althugh we do still take her swimming now and then. Her excema is getting better and so am hoping to enrol in another term after the year. By the end of our first term she could swim underwater (not for the faint hearted) and hold onto the side (!) It really is truly amazing. My partner was the one who got in the water with her and I would stand at the side and watch....he is far more confident in the water than I am and I did not want to pass on any anxiety to her. The first time she went under the water my heart was in my mouth but then she came up as if nothing had happened!! Meanwhile I was blubbing at the side....a proud mummy monent!!

I have heard that the baby will have the reflex to hold their breath underwater for quite a long time after birth (do you know how long?) but it must be really scary to let them actually do it!! Me and my husband want to take Adam to our local pool.... how long should you keep them in the water for? I imagine that you have to keep an eye on them not getting too cold.

I only ever keep her in for 20 mins max. A lot of the baby pools are quite warm but you can't keep them in too long. I don't think they have the ability to shiver at that age. I also take a hooded towel with me and leave it at the side of the pool so that when we get out I can wrap her up straight away. The little pool close to me is lovely and warm and the family changing rooms are really toasty.

You are right about them holding their breath. I am not sure for how long but when I went to water babies they are only literally under the water for about 3 seconds - it feels like ages though! It is truly amazing.

My nephew went also (and still does) and he is 16 months. He is a complete water baby. My sister had his picture taken under water and it's fantastic. She gave them out as Christmas presents last year. It's a bit like the front of the Nirvana album (I think it's that album anyway.) My nephew is under water, eyes open, smiling and there are little bubbles coming out of him......really funny!

The class that I went to organise a photo shoot at the end of the term. They are really well worth it - it's one of the reasons that I want to take her back!!

Hi

I have severe eczema, thank goodness Katie does not have it. However, I do limit the amount of baths i giver her, and top and tail her with water only everyday. I was too given loads of products which i do not use really, including talcum powder which i will definitely not use and are too gathering dust at the bottom of my wardrobe. I tend to veer for organic based products, and genrally limit the amount that i use on her.

I used to use the lavender bath lotion/soak..... and the oils to go with it. But when he was 7 months old, eczema struck him down. We battled with it for months, and the susmmer was especially uncomfortable for him! It turned into dermatitis at one point, and got infected, it was horrible!! I was told it was due to the bathing and what I had been using to wash him.
I then had steroid creams and a list as long as my arm that followed to try and treat him. He still to this day suffers.
All I do with my daugthter is top n tail each morning and a quick wash under her chin(s). And a proper bath ONLY TWICE a week.

At the moment, she shows no signs of dry skin, and hopefully, if we carry on as we are she will still be fine.

Hi Hysteria

So sorry to hear that your son has eczema, I developed it when i was 9 months and still have it to this day, though not as bad. I don't know that if you can develop it through teh products that you use, though the perfumed ones can irritate. My grandma had it, my mum has not but i have, so i think that it is partly genetic. I use Oilatum in my bath, and started to with Katie as she has dry skin but thank goodness no eczema.

Now that Katie is on solids and eating for England she tends to do more big poos so requires a wash everyday, though, do not use baby products when washing her, just water. I stand or sit her in the bath while i give her a quick shower on her lower half.

I hope that this helps, try to use more natural organic products if you have to on your son.

Well, where do I start, I don't even know of any non medical treatment for his eczema as it tool almost a year to find something medical that would keep it at bay. I would like to know of anything that may work though.
He is currently using dermol, which works really well, but if it is going to be long term, I would prefer something a little more natural.
I also suffer with eczema, and it is at it's worst now than it has been for the last ten years. So I do agree he has probably inherited it from me, but also using all those lovely looking smelly products didn't help.
I for the moment, will be sticking to plain old water and some fun sponges and washcloths at bathtime. Cheap and cheerful!

Hi Hysteria - my baby has excema and we have tried all sorts of lotions etc. Have you tried Aveeno? This seems to help although I have heard that Aloe Vera is brilliant. I am back at the doctor tomorrow for a progress check on my baby and I am going to ask about it then. Will let you know how I get on...x

Thank you Karen999, have not heard of Aveeno, how does it treat eczema/what is in it.

The one my son has at the moment is working well, just want something moe natural that I know is going to be safe long term.

Luckily he is not suffering at the moment and only has a few rashy areas. Unfortunatly I kow as soon as the weather starts hotting up, so will his eczema.

Hope all goes well with your little one.

They usually prescribe Aveeno last as it is quite expensive (!!) however it really calms my daughters excema down....does not go away completely but is way better than it used to be. It is oatmeal based. Have you tried attaching a bag of oats to the tap when you are running a bath? This helps also.

Hi, use a pair of tights, fill with oats and let the bath water run through. Totally safe to use with your 6 month old as it is completely natural.

If you google this method you will see a lot of testimonials from people who have tried it. One of them being David Bellamy!
