With the increase in gun and knife violence, can the parents of the perpetrators held as responsible?

This is the age old 'nature vs nurture' dabate, are we bringing our children up to be badly behaved, I think in todays society there are too many influences for us to blame just one factor. Family, school, friends, culture.... etc. Children are children, their upbringing may help, but their comes a time when they are free-thinkers, and do whatever they want.

id say that there are many factors that are contributing to the way teenagers are these days the paretnts are one factor but there is also peer pressure and kids trying to belong. i think that these kids are old enough to make ther own choices so its there fault they do these things. also i would say that not enough is being done to stop it so the kids know that they can get away with it they will carry on.

Upbringing definitely comes into it; my mum works at one of the rougher schools in my area and says that in 905 of cases of kids who are badly behaved, you need only look at their parents to see why that might be.

However holding parents responsible is another matter altogether: whilst there are lots of kids for whom a bad upbringing has at least in part led to their bad behaviour, there are also many whose parents have done their absolute best but are just saddled with badly behaved kids. And ultimately, particularly were teenagers are concerned, a parent can't be held responsible for the actions of another free-thinking individual

I think the rise in young offending is down to several factors combined. Yes, bad parenting plays a part; but what about the total lack of discipline in schools these days, and the wishy-washy way that the police and justice system in this country deal with offenders? Kids know they'll get away with pretty much anything at home, at school, and with the law. So they push the boundaries further and further

All we need to do is look up the 'cycle of deprivation' to answer most questions about or changing society. It is not facts, but it helps you to understand.

Although it is said this theory only applies in poorer areas of society, but how they work that out i'm not sure.
